Insufficient Warfarin Therapy Is Associated With Higher Severity of Stroke Than No Anticoagulation in Patients With Atrial Fibrillation and Acute Anterior-Circulation Stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: Insufficient VKA therapy on admission was associated with higher severity of stroke and higher prevalence of proximal artery occlusion in patients with AF and acute anterior-circulation stroke compared with no anticoagulant medication. PMID: 29269702 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Incidence of Ischemic Stroke in Japanese Patients With Atrial Fibrillation Not Receiving Anticoagulation Therapy.
Conclusions:A low incidence rate of ischemic stroke was observed in Japanese NVAF patients except for those with CHADS2 score ≥2. In this pooled analysis, history of ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack, advanced age, and hypertension were identified as independent risk factors for ischemic stroke. PMID: 25501800 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Two-Year Outcomes of Anticoagulation for Acute Ischemic Stroke With Nonvalvular Atrial Fibrillation - SAMURAI-NVAF Study.
CONCLUSIONS: Stroke/TIA patients receiving DOACs for secondary prevention were younger and had lower stroke severity and risk indices than those receiving warfarin. Estimated cumulative incidences of stroke and systemic embolism within 2 years were similar between warfarin and DOACs users, but those of death and intracranial hemorrhage were significantly lower among DOAC users. PMID: 29863095 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Timing of Treatment Initiation With Oral Anticoagulants for Acute Ischemic Stroke in Patients With Nonvalvular Atrial Fibrillation.
CONCLUSIONS: Our study revealed that neurologists began OACs earlier in patients with mild acute cerebral infarction. Even in patients with severe stroke, OACs were started earlier than expected. PMID: 27980235 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

CHADS2, CHA2DS2-VASc, and R2CHADS2 Scores Are Associated With 3-Month Functional Outcome of Stroke in Patients With Prior Coronary Artery Disease.
Conclusions: CHADS2, CHA2DS2-VASc and R2CHADS2 are useful in predicting functional status after stroke in CAD patients. PMID: 24694770 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Development of Quality Indicators of Stroke Centers and Feasibility of Their Measurement Using a Nationwide Insurance Claims Database in Japan - J-ASPECT Study.
CONCLUSIONS: We developed QIs for primary and comprehensive stroke care. The DPC database may allow efficient data collection at low cost and decreased burden to evaluate the developed QIs. PMID: 31554766 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Role of Remote Monitoring in Detection of Atrial Arrhythmia, Stroke Reduction, and Use of Anticoagulation Therapy - A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.
CONCLUSIONS: RM is effective for atrial arrhythmia detection in patients using wearable devices and for reducing the risk of stroke in patients with CIED. PMID: 33012748 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Incidence and Risk Factors of Stroke or Systemic Embolism in Patients With Atrial Fibrillation and Heart Failure - The Fushimi AF Registry.
CONCLUSIONS: The effect of HF on the incidence of stroke/SE may depend on the stage or severity of HF in patients with AF. The incidence of stroke/SE was markedly increased in the 30 days after admission for HF, but compensated 'stable' HF did not appear to confer an independent risk. Guideline-Adherent Treatment for Stroke and Death in Atrial Fibrillation Patients From UK and Japanese AF Registries.
CONCLUSIONS: Approximately half of the AF patients received optimal ATT according to guideline recommendations, which was associated with a lower risk of stroke. Furthermore, there was no interaction for the 2 populations and the influence of ATT adherence. PMID: 31694989 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Anticoagulants, Reperfusion Therapy, and Outcomes in Ischemic Stroke Patients With Non-Valvular Atrial Fibrillation - A Single-Center, 6-Year Experience of 546 Consecutive Patients.
CONCLUSIONS: Inappropriate anticoagulant use for stroke patients with NVAF did not decrease over time. An increase in reperfusion therapy was a strong factor in improved functional outcomes and mortality. PMID: 30158346 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Anti-Xa Activity and Event Risk in Patients With Direct Factor Xa Inhibitors Initiated Early After Stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: In these patients who started rivaroxaban or apixaban early after stroke, AXA levels in the early period were related to future hemorrhagic events. PMID: 30210082 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Prevalence and Associated Stroke Risk of Human Immunodeficiency Virus-Infected Patients With Atrial Fibrillation - A Nationwide Cohort Study.
CONCLUSIONS: The risks of ischemic stroke/SE and major bleeding were significantly higher in HIV-infected patients compared with non-HIV-infected patients with AF. Despite this, the actual use of OACs among AF patients with HIV was suboptimal. PMID: 31619594 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
