Left atrial appendage exclusion is effective in reducing postoperative stroke after mitral valve replacement
ConclusionsConcurrent LAA exclusion during MVR is a safe and effective way to reduce postoperative ischemic stroke, particularly in patients with AF.

Outcomes of left ventricular assist device implantation in hypercoagulable patients
ConclusionsIn this series, positive laboratory tests for hypercoagulability were common amongst patients undergoing LVAD implantation although few had positive clinical histories. Survival and freedom from thromboembolic complications were comparable to non ‐hypercoagulable patients. Hypercoagulability alone should therefore not serve as a contraindication to LVAD implantation.

Outcomes of truncus arteriosus repair and predictors of mortality
Conclusion22q11.2 deletion syndrome was associated with an inverse risk of death despite having more noncardiac comorbidities; this patient subpopulation also had a higher length of stay and increased cost of hospitalization.

Minimally invasive, simplified double ‐layer left atrial appendage closure
AbstractThe left atrial appendage (LAA) has been identified as a site of thrombus formation in the heart and as a source of embolism in patients with atrial fibrillation, leading to stroke. Studies suggest that LAA closure may reduce the risk for stroke and the need for anticoagulation; conversely, incomplete closure can increase the stroke risk almost 12 ‐fold. Because open heart surgery is associated with increased risk for subsequent stroke, surgeons generally prefer to close the LAA during heart surgery, as recommended in current atrial fibrillation management guidelines. Building on trends toward minimally invasive ...

Isolated surgical left atrial appendage closure: Revisiting utility and indications in a burgeoning era of percutaneous therapy
ConclusionIt is important to recall the utility of therapies that have been previously used with success for intracardiac thrombi and still remain as viable options.

Cannula migration through an undiagnosed patent foramen ovale and embolic cerebrovascular accident in a patient with femoral venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation
We present a case report of a patient with a pulmonary embolus placed on venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation who developed venous cannula migration through an undiagnosed patent foramen ovale causing an ischemic stroke due to a thrombus and requiring thrombectomy and device closure of the atrial defect.

Surgical excision of a free floating ascending aortic thrombus
ConclusionFree ‐floating ascending aortic thrombus is a rare source of peripheral embolization. We advocate for emergent surgical resection to prevent further embolization and stroke.

Trends in HeartMate 3: What we know so far
ConclusionHeartMate 3 has reduced the rate of disabling stroke and pump thrombosis. However, despite increased hemocompatibility due to specialized design features, the residual risk of both surgical, and gastrointestinal bleeding remains a major adverse outcome. Different anticoagulation management and surgical techniques have been evaluated to address the remaining complications.

A traveler in transit: A case of an impending thrombus entrapped in a patent foramen ovale
We report a case of a 50 ‐year‐old male taxi driver who was diagnosed with a massive saddle pulmonary embolism, leg deep venous thromboembolism, and pending paradoxical embolus through a PFO with systemic embolization. The patient had an inferior vena cava (IVC) filter inserted immediately followed by surgical thromboem bolectomy and closure of PFO. He was discharged home 1 month after surgery. Surgery is the treatment of choice for preventing systemic embolization particularly cryptogenic stroke and its sequelae from pending paradoxical embolus. Preoperative IVC filter is a useful adjunct to prevent ongoing thromb oem...

Outcomes after Ross procedure in adult patients: A meta ‐analysis and microsimulation
ConclusionsRoss procedure in nonelderly adults is associated with low mortality and low risk of adverse events both at short ‐ and long‐term follow‐up. The surgical community must prioritize a large, expertize‐based randomized controlled trial to definitively address the risks and benefits of the Ross procedure compared to conventional aortic valve replacement.
