Post-stroke pneumonia: Factors associated with readmission within 90 days of stroke discharge
Stroke is the fifth leading cause of death and a leading cause of disability within the United States.1,2 On average, a stroke occurs every 40 seconds and accounts for approximately 1 in every 19 deaths.2 The prevalence of stroke is projected to increase by 20.5% from 2012 to 2030.2 Post-stroke complications are prevalent; infection occurs among 30% of acute cases.3 Pneumonia is one of the most common post-stroke infections and is associated with increased morbidity.4,5 Moreover, pneumonia is recognized as an independent risk factor for stroke-related mortality.

Association of underlying untreated cardiovascular risk factors with mortality and functional outcome in ischaemic stroke patients
Stroke is the third leading cause of death after ischaemic heart disease (IHD) and pneumonia in Malaysia.1 Aziz et al. reported that Malaysia's prevalence of ischaemic stroke had increased from 42.8 to 118.7 in 100,000 from 2010 to 2014. The report showed that 8-11% of ischaemic stroke patients died within 30 days while 56-61% survived with significant disability in Malaysia.2 Our previous study showed that patients with ischaemic stroke in Malaysia were younger, but the mortality rate was higher than in other countries.

Dysphagia-related acute stroke complications: A retrospective observational cohort study
Dysphagia, or impaired swallowing, is reported to affect between 8.1% and 45.3% of patients following stroke.1 Dysphagia is associated with longer length of stay (LOS) in acute hospital, increased healthcare costs, and greater long-term institutionalisation.2,3 Aspiration pneumonia mediates a significant proportion of this deleterious association and, in its own right, is associated with increased length of stay in hospital,4 poorer post-stroke functioning,5,6 and increased mortality.7

The effects of combined early oral health care and early mobilisation on the incidence of stroke-associated pneumonia
Pneumonia after stroke, which influences mortality1 and duration of hospitalisation,2 has been a common critical issue in stroke patients. In 2015, the Pneumonia in Stroke Consensus Group proposed the diagnostic criteria of stroke-associated pneumonia (SAP), which is defined as a spectrum of lower respiratory tract infections in the first 7 days after stroke.3 A systematic review and meta-analysis reported that the incidence of SAP was 14%.4 There are several mechanisms of SAP onset, such as aspiration related to consciousness disturbance and dysphagia, stroke-induced immunodepression due to pathogenic bacteria, and immunological changes.

Association Between Oral Anticoagulants and Stroke Severity at Onset in Elderly Patients with Cardioembolic Stroke Due to Non-Valvular Atrial Fibrillation
The prevention of cardioembolic stroke is an important public health priority in Japan due to its high prevalence in elderly individuals. Compared to their younger counterparts, elderly patients with cardioembolic stroke are more likely to have multiple comorbidities, a higher risk of serious complications, such as pneumonia and heart failure, and cognitive impairments (e.g., dementia or delirium), which may adversely affect their ability to participate in active rehabilitation. These factors negatively affect clinical outcomes, and many elderly stroke survivors require long-term care despite the early implementation of intensive therapy.

Bilateral large vessel occlusion causing massive ischemic stroke in a covid-19 patient
The case of a 70-year-old male presenting an ischemic stroke related to COVID-19 infection is described. He was initially admitted to the hospital with respiratory insufficiency syndrome secondary to pneumonia caused by SARS Co2. In the next days, he developed rapid neurological deterioration characterized by drowsiness which progressed to deep coma. D-dimer was elevated. Brain CT scan showed bilateral massive ischemic stroke located in the anterior circulation, CT angiogram showed occlusion in the left internal carotid artery and the right middle cerebral artery.

Delayed Swallowing Reflex is Overlooked in Swallowing Screening Among Acute Stroke Patients
Dysphagia in the acute phase of stroke contributes significantly to poor outcomes and is associated with the development of aspiration pneumonia and malnutrition. Therefore, an accurate evaluation of swallowing is necessary before initiating oral food intake. The modified water swallow test (MWST) and the repetitive saliva swallow test (RSST) are commonly used as bedside screening methods for swallowing dysfunction, but it is unclear whether other factors contribute to dysphagia and consequent aspiration.

Growing evidence indicates an increased prevalence of neurological involvement (e.g., in the form of stroke) during virus infection.
