Target immobilization on glass microfiber membranes as a label-free strategy for hit identification
Anal Bioanal Chem. 2023 Sep 21. doi: 10.1007/s00216-023-04951-w. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe discovery of novel chemical entities targeting G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) is usually guided by their receptor affinity. However, traditional affinity assay methods and hit identification procedures are usually laborious and expensive. In this work, the type-2 vasopressin receptor (V2R) was chosen as a prototypical GPCR. Membrane fragments from cells highly expressing SNAP-V2R were immobilized on the surface of a glass microfiber (GMF) coated with O6-benzylguanine (BG). This was achieved by transferring the benzyl gro...

Performance of volatile fatty acids production from food waste at the presence of alkyl ethoxy polyglycosides and sodium dodecyl sulfate
This study investigated the performance of VFAs production from food waste at the presence of alkyl ethoxy polyglycosides (AEG) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). The highest yield of VFAs was obtained at 0.1 g AEG/g TS (14.53 g COD/L), which increased by 25.80% than the Blank. But inhibited phenomenon was observed at other reactors with relatively low yield and delayed fermentation time. The inhibition of lactate's production and bioconversion delayed the fermentation time, and SDS has changed the acidogenic fermentation type from lactate-butyrate fermentation to acetate fermentation. In addition, more organic matter disso...

Microplastics in wastewater treatment plants and their contributions to surface water and farmland pollution in China
This study examines the presence of MPs in sewage and sludge in Shenzhen WWTPs and estimates the annual mass loading of MPs from WWTPs to surface water and farmland soil in China. According to our results, for Shenzhen, the annual contribution of MPs from WWTPs (which was obtained by multiplying the annual treated sewage volume by the estimated MP density in the treated sewage) to surface water could be 70.6-302 tons. With a normalized extrapolation model of population density, the contribution of national urban WWTPs to MPs in surface water was estimated to be 734 -3.10 × 103 tons/year, of which 220-950 tons/year entered...

Singlet oxygen in the removal of organic pollutants: An updated review on the degradation pathways based on mass spectrometry and DFT calculations
Chemosphere. 2023 Sep 19:140203. doi: 10.1016/j.chemosphere.2023.140203. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe degradation of pollutants by a non-radical pathway involving singlet oxygen (1O2) is highly relevant in advanced oxidation processes. Photosensitizers, modified photocatalysts, and activated persulfates can generate highly selective 1O2 in the medium. The selective reaction of 1O2 with organic pollutants results in the evolution of different intermediate products. While these products can be identified using mass spectrometry (MS) techniques, predicting a proper degradation mechanism in a 1O2-based process is still ch...

Toxicity of bisphenol A (BPA) and its analogues BPF and BPS on the free-floating macrophyte Salvinia biloba
Chemosphere. 2023 Sep 19:140235. doi: 10.1016/j.chemosphere.2023.140235. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEvidence linking the toxicity of bisphenol A (BPA) to environmental and public-health issues has led to restrictions on its use. This compound has been gradually replaced with analogues proposed as a safer alternative, normally bisphenol F (BPF) and bisphenol S (BPS), but these substitutes are structurally almost identical to BPA, suggesting they may pose similar risks. The effects of BPA and these analogues were compared for antioxidant activity, lipid peroxidation, free-radical generation, photosynthetic pigments, and c...

Highly Efficient Depolymerization of Waste Polyesters Enabled by Transesterification/Hydrogenation Relay Under Mild Conditions
Angew Chem Int Ed Engl. 2023 Sep 21:e202312564. doi: 10.1002/anie.202312564. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe efficient depolymerization of polyesters under mild conditions remains a significant challenge. Herein, we demonstrate a highly efficient strategy for the degradation of a diverse array of waste polyesters as low to 80 °C, 1 bar H2. The key to the success of this transformation relied on the initial transesterification of macromolecular polyester into more degradable oligomeric fragments in the presence of CH3OH and the subsequent hydrogenation by the use of the rationally designed quinaldine-based Ru complex. Co...
