Icaritin protects against oxidative stress-induced injury in cardiac H9c2 cells via Akt/Nrf2/HO-1 and calcium signalling pathways
Publication date: October 2015 Source:Journal of Functional Foods, Volume 18, Part A Author(s): Si Wan Lei, Guozhen Cui, George Pak Heng Leung, Sharon Chui Wah Luk, Maggie Pui Man Hoi, Liang Wang, Gail B. Mahady, Simon Ming Yuen Lee Icaritin, a prenylflavonoid isolated from Herbal Epimedii, is well known for its osteoplastic and anti-tumour activities. Here, we examined the cardioprotective actions of icaritin on cardiac H9c2 cells under oxidative stress conditions induced by treatment with tert-butylhydroperoxide (t-BHP). Icaritin at a concentration range between 1 and 4 µM effectively increased cell viabilit...

Zyflamend, a polyherbal mixture, inhibits lipogenesis and mTORC1 signalling via activation of AMPK
The objective in this study was to determine if the antiproliferative effects are mediated, in part, through the activation of AMPK signalling and inhibition of its downstream targets, lipogenesis and mTORC1 complex. By increasing the phosphorylation of AMPK in CWR22Rv1 and PC3 prostate cancer cell lines, Zyflamend decreased de novo lipid biosynthesis by decreasing the activity of acetyl-CoA carboxylase and the expressions of fatty acid synthase and SREBP-1c, with a concomitant up regulation of fatty acid oxidation. In addition, via AMPK, Zyflamend inhibited the activity of mTORC1 complex by directly phosphorylating raptor...

Ursolic acid protects hepatocytes against lipotoxicity through activating autophagy via an AMPK pathway
Publication date: August 2015 Source:Journal of Functional Foods, Volume 17 Author(s): Fanyu Meng , Hua Ning , Zongxiang Sun , Fangfang Huang , Yanchuan Li , Xia Chu , Huimin Lu , Changhao Sun , Songtao Li Ursolic acid is a naturally occurring pentacyclic triterpenoid in many plants, such as medicinal herbs and food, and was previously found to be an effective phytochemical that protected against high-fat diet-induced hepatic steatosis and liver injury. However, the molecular mechanisms are not fully determined. The present study examined the protective role of ursolic acid against saturated fatty acid-induced lipotoxici...
