The potential of digital health records for public health research, policy, and practice: the case of the Lombardy Region Data Warehouse
Acta Biomed. 2023 Aug 30;94(S3):e2023121. doi: 10.23750/abm.v94iS3.14407.ABSTRACTDigital health records can provide advantages to healthcare practice, policy, and research. Several countries have established population-based digitalised data collection, integrated through data linkage techniques. In Lombardy (Italy), a regional population-based registry was established in the 2000s. It collects data from the social and health sector, anonymised immediately after their acquisition and restructured in a single repository. Data can be used for public health interest, planning, monitoring, services evaluation, and research. In...

The selfie project: A successful approach to lifestyle monitoring and health promotion in adolescents
Acta Biomed. 2023 Aug 30;94(S3):e2023133. doi: 10.23750/abm.v94iS3.14425.ABSTRACTAdolescence is a critical period for the physical and cognitive development. To promote adolescents' health and well-being, prevention and health education interventions are to be implemented at all levels of society, with schools and families playing a fundamental role. In 2015, the "Semi di Melo" Center for Education and Research on Childhood and Adolescence was established in Milan, northern Italy to help parents and teachers to better explicate their supportive role toward their children/students during adolescence. Through a survey called...

Compliance with recommended preventive behaviours and restrictions for Covid-19: an exploratory analysis of Italians' attitudes
CONCLUSIONS: government's fear-based interventions did not seem to work since Italians tended to adhere to the rules primarily out of respect for legitimate authority. Future research should focus more on the topic of trust in institutions in emergency situations with the aim of highlighting the key points for successful governance, also in terms of rules compliance.PMID:37695183 | DOI:10.23750/abm.v94iS3.14431

The role of Mayors in protecting citizens' health: a brief report from Italy
In conclusion, mayors represent the institutional figures closest to the citizens. Municipalities and regional governments should coordinate and integrate their strategies and policies to meet health and social needs of citizens, providing easy access to shared pathways. Municipalities also regulate autonomously fundamental aspects related to the urban environment and can promote and protect health and improve the quality of life for citizens.PMID:37695182 | DOI:10.23750/abm.v94iS3.14481

Genesis and prospects of the shortage of specialist physicians in Italy and indicators of the 39 schools of hygiene and preventive medicine
Conclusions: In recent decades, poor planning and early retirement have led to a shortage of doctors, particularly specialists, that will not be resolved until after 2030. Proposed solutions to this 'health emergency' include importing doctors from abroad, delaying the retirement age, recruiting junior doctors to the National Health Service and changing the distribution of junior doctor contracts.PMID:37695180 | DOI:10.23750/abm.v94iS3.14512

Delays in cancer diagnosis: challenges and opportunities in Europe
CONCLUSIONS: For ensuring appropriate care, it is crucial to better understand how different factors, including physical and mental health morbidities, impact cancer diagnosis. The "NextGenerationEU" program and the "National Recovery and Resilience Plan" (PNNR in Italy) following the Covid-19 pandemic offer opportunities for reducing inequalities, improving cancer care and chronic disease management for ageing populations.PMID:37695178 | DOI:10.23750/abm.v94iS3.14513

Impact of the educational program "Igiene Insieme"in 1,991 Italian primary schools: student behavior and  incidence of SARS-CoV-2
CONCLUSIONS: We report an overall positive effect of health education interventions in primary schools. Although the limitations in the study design, our findings are important to inform planning, implementation and monitoring of health promotion campaigns in young generations so as to contribute to limit the risk of infection spread at the community level.PMID:37695175 | DOI:10.23750/abm.v94iS3.14561

Promoting societal resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic: a multi-country analysis of public health strategies
CONCLUSIONS: The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the importance of Public Health in developing proper strategies and utilizing digitals tools to counteract infodemic and spread relevant information. Healthcare workers should improve their communication skills to face future epidemics and be trusted by the population. Social media and digital platforms should be studied and used effectively in times of emergency.PMID:37695174 | DOI:10.23750/abm.v94iS3.14562

Innovative COVID-19 diagnostics and testing strategies in Italy, Denmark, UK, Israel and Sweden: a comparative analysis including tests, incidence and mortality
In this study, we analyzed the use of these techniques in five countries (i.e. Italy, Denmark, the United Kingdom, Sweden, and Israel) based on their specific national testing and contact tracing strategies. We also examined the number of tests performed per week, the positivity rate of tests, and the mortality rate in these populations during the same time periods. These countries were chosen based on the directives of the consortium involved in the CORONADX project.PMID:37695173 | DOI:10.23750/abm.v94iS3.14565

Impact on mental health, disease management, and socioeconomic modifications in hematological patients during the COVID-19 pandemic in Italy
CONCLUSION: During the initial phase of the COVID-19 pandemic, hematological patients had elevated levels of depression, anxiety, and stress compared with the general population. The delay in their treatment and employment status played a role in their mental health outcomes. These findings emphasize the importance of further research to gain deeper insight into the long-term psychological effects and explore effective strategies for managing mental health in similar crises.PMID:37693118 | PMC:PMC10483981 | DOI:10.1177/20406207231190683

Rolling e-learning: an educational model to support Italian healthcare professionals during the COVID-19 pandemic
CONCLUSIONS: Italian healthcare professionals working during the pandemic overwhelmingly appreciated and valued the rolling e-learning offer aimed at widening the dissemination of the best practices on COVID-19. This educational model provides independent, evidence-based and tailored information with the undoubted advantages of time flexibility, remote participation and continuous update, all elements that make it a useful tool in a pandemic as well as in a post-pandemic era.PMID:37695199 | DOI:10.23750/abm.v94iS3.14204
