Factors Affecting Persistent Postoperative Pain in Patients with Hip Fractures.
This study investigated the multifaceted factors related to persistent pain occurring during the acute phase and subacute phase of recovery after HF surgery. We conducted a prospective 8-week study of older HF patients after surgery. We evaluated pain intensity, depression symptoms, the fear of falling, pain catastrophizing, cognition and attention, the ability to perform activities of daily living, and the physical performance at 2 weeks (acute phase) and at 4 weeks (subacute phase) after surgery. Patients were divided into the light group (Verbal Rating Scale (VRS) score ≤1) and severe group (VRS score ≥2) according ...

Catastrophizing Has a Better Prediction for TMD Than Other Psychometric and Experimental Pain Variables.
Abstract Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) are characterized by moderate to severe pain in the masticatory muscles and/or the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). The present study is a part of a multidisciplinary project, initiated by the Norwegian Ministry of Health. The main purpose of this study is to compare a cohort of TMD patients to healthy individuals regarding experimental pain, the degree of disability caused by living with pain and psychometric variables, and to investigate which of these variables is the best predictor for TMD patients. We hypothesised that TMD patients have more disability when living wit...

Is Dry Needling Effective When Combined with Other Therapies for Myofascial Trigger Points Associated with Neck Pain Symptoms? A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.
Conclusion: Low-to-moderate evidence suggests a positive effect to the combination of dry needling with other interventions for improving pain intensity, pain-related disability, pressure pain thresholds, and cervical range of motion in people with neck pain associated with TrPs at short-term. No midterm or long-term effects were observed. PMID: 33603940 [PubMed - in process]

The Use of Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) in a Major Cancer Center for the Treatment of Severe Cancer-Related Pain and Associated Disability.
CONCLUSIONS.: TENS provides a beneficial adjunct for the treatment of cancer pain, especially when utilized as a goal-directed therapy. PMID: 23438255 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

A controlled investigation of continuing pain education for long-term care staff.
CONCLUSIONS: Contrary to previous research, the present study found that the interactive PE program was effective in changing pain beliefs and improving knowledge. Continuing PE in LTC has the potential to address knowledge gaps among front-line LTC providers. PMID: 23457681 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE]

Quantitative sensory testing in patients with or without ongoing pain one year after orthognathic surgery.
CONCLUSION: The pattern of sensory alteration in orthognathic surgical patients with or without pain was characterized by sensory loss in thermal parameters and non-nociceptive mechanosensory parameters and sensory gain in nociceptive mechanosensory parameters. The elevated VDT might be a potential indicator of the impact of postoperative pain on trigeminal somatosensory functions. PMID: 25347165 [PubMed - in process]

Fatigue mediates the relationship between pain interference and distress in patients with persistent orofacial pain.
CONCLUSION: These results suggest that interventions targeted specifically at fatigue symptoms may be helpful for reducing interference and improving quality of life in patients with persistent orofacial pain. PMID: 24482786 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE]

The role of pain catastrophizing in the provision of rescue analgesia by health care providers following major joint arthroplasty.
CONCLUSIONS: The findings of this study shed light on the importance of psychological factors in determining RA provision following MJA. This encourages further reflection on acute post-surgical pain management by health care providers, namely by raising clinicians' awareness about the factors that influence patient-provider interactions, as well as their impact on decision-making regarding RA provision. A global assessment of patients, wherein psychological variables are taken into account, is warranted in order to improve the quality of surgical pain management. Finally, these findings provide support for the design of a...

Effectiveness of pulsed radiofrequency with multifunctional epidural electrode in chronic lumbosacral radicular pain with neuropathic features.
CONCLUSIONS: PRF of dorsal root ganglion performed with a multifunctional electrode for > 240 seconds appears to be safe and might be more effective than the classic 120 seconds needle-mediated approach. Therefore, it may be considered as a valuable tool for the treatment of lumbosacral radicular pain with neuropathic features. PMID: 25415772 [PubMed - in process]

Comorbid Disorders and Sociodemographic Variables in Temporomandibular Pain in the General Dutch Population.
Conclusion: In the general Dutch population, women more often report TMD-pain complaints than men, and patients with TMD-pain complaints more often show other pain complaints than persons without TMD pain. In contrast to common beliefs, no clear association with age was found. Furthermore, widespread pain complaints were more common in non-native Dutch and lower-educated females. Intramuscular Temperature Modulates Glutamate-Evoked Masseter Muscle Pain Intensity in Humans.
CONCLUSION: Glutamate-evoked jaw muscle pain was significantly altered by the temperature of the injection solution. Although temperature perception in the jaw muscle is poor, pain intensity is increased when the muscle tissue temperature is elevated. PMID: 25905534 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

The Role of Suggestions in Hypnosis for Chronic Pain: A Review of the Literature.
Authors: Dillworth T, Jensen MP Abstract Several controlled trials have demonstrated that hypnosis is an efficacious treatment for chronic pain. However, less attention has been given to the specific procedures and suggestions used in hypnotic treatments in research. The goal of this review was to address the issue of differences in the content of hypnotic suggestions, including pain management suggestions, non-pain related suggestions, and posthypnotic suggestions, in the context of published clinical trials of hypnosis for chronic pain management. This review focused on the types of suggestions used in twenty fiv...

Central Sensitization and Perceived Indoor Climate among Workers with Chronic Upper-Limb Pain: Cross-Sectional Study.
Authors: Sundstrup E, Jakobsen MD, Brandt M, Jay K, Persson R, Andersen LL Abstract Monitoring of indoor climate is an essential part of occupational health and safety. While questionnaires are commonly used for surveillance, not all workers may perceive an identical indoor climate similarly. The aim of this study was to evaluate perceived indoor climate among workers with chronic pain compared with pain-free colleagues and to determine the influence of central sensitization on this perception. Eighty-two male slaughterhouse workers, 49 with upper-limb chronic pain and 33 pain-free controls, replied to a questionna...
