Arch Therapeutics (OTC:ARTH) said today that it launched a European safety-and-efficacy study of its AC5 surgical hemostat in bleeding wounds incurred during dermatology procedures.
Framingham, Mass.-based Arch, which won approval for the randomized, controlled, single-blind study last December, said the 46-patient trial will include a 10-subject arm who are taking blood thinners. FDA clears Ethicon ’ s Surgicel powdered hemostat
Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) subsidiary Ethicon said today it won FDA approval for its Surgicel powder absorbable hemostat designed as an adjunctive hemostatic solution to control continuous oozing on broad or raw surfaces.
The Surgicel powdered hemostat is comprised of oxidized regenerated cellulose, the base component in all of its Surgicel products. The powdered solution comes with an applicator and is designed to penetrate through oozing blood and form clots that stay intact even when the surgical field is irrigated, Ethicon said.

Arch Therapeutics wins EU nod for AC5 hemostat trial
Arch Therapeutics (OTC:ARTH) said it won approval for a European safety-and-efficacy study of its AC5 surgical hemostat in bleeding wounds incurred during dermatology procedures.
Framingham, Mass.-based Arch said the endpoints for the single-blinded study of up to 50 patients include time to hemostasis and product-related adverse effects at 30 days. One arm of the trial will include patients taking blood thinning drugs, the company said.
The 1st patient is expected to enter the trial early next year, with data due within 2 quarters, according to the company.

Baxter (NYSE:BAX) said today that it closed the $153 million acquisition of hemostat and sealant assets from Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals (NYSE:MNK).
