Is Our Academic System Ready for a New Coronavirus Normal?
Credit: Pîxabay.By Esther Ngumbi and Brian LovettILLINOIS, United States, Mar 11 2020 (IPS) Institutions of higher education have a responsibility to lead by example and to provide current, high-quality information to the people and communities that support them. This responsibility is no clearer than during a public health and information crisis like the one presented by this novel coronavirus. State and local governments in particular should be able to rely on Universities for guidance on protective evidence-based precautionary measures, whether it’s cancelling events, closing schools or formulating public health post...

Gender “ Could be Coronavirus Key ”
By External SourceMar 17 2020 (IPS) Analysing how coronavirus impacts genders differently could be key in fighting the disease, say public health experts. Women are on the coronavirus frontlines as healthcare workers, primary caregivers and migrant workers, but policy responses often fail to consider how gender and epidemics interact. The Ebola and Zika outbreaks underline the urgent need for gendered analyses, says Clare Wenham, assistant professor in global health policy at the London School of Economics and Political Science. Globally, women make up about 70 per cent of the health workforce and are primarily responsible...

Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) in the Republic of Korea
The outbreak of Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus, or MERS-CoV, in the Republic of Korea continues to evolve. WHO is in close contact with the country’s government and Ministry of Health, and is receiving information as soon as facts are confirmed. The quality of reporting has allowed almost real-time insight into the dynamics of the outbreak. Aggressive contact tracing and testing for infection may help explain the rapid expansion of the outbreak. Human-to-human transmission has been documented. At this stage, WHO has no evidence of sustained transmission in the community.
