Diagnosis and treatment of nasal and ocular allergies: the Allergies, Immunotherapy, and RhinoconjunctivitiS (AIRS) surveys.
CONCLUSION: Most patients took nonprescription medications for their allergy symptoms or were treated by general practitioners, who did not use allergy testing when diagnosing ARC. Most patients seen by allergist/immunologists and otolaryngologists were evaluated with allergy tests, and most allergen immunotherapy was provided by allergy specialists. An exploratory investigation of food choice behavior of teenagers with and without food allergies.
CONCLUSION: Food-allergic teenagers strive to be able to make similar food choices to their friends, although differences to non-food-allergic teenagers exist. It is important to address these differences to improve their dietary management. PMID: 24656658 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Information and support from dietary consultation for mothers of children with food allergies.
CONCLUSION: Mothers of children with food allergies want to understand how to provide a nutritionally adequate, allergen-safe diet while maintaining a normal life. Hence, mothers value a range of support from dietitians, including monitoring their child's health and providing information, practical advice and support, and emotional support. Very early introduction of semisolid foods in preterm infants does not increase food allergies or atopic dermatitis.
CONCLUSION: The very early introduction of complementary foods into the diet of preterm babies did not increase the incidence of food allergies or atopic dermatitis even among the most preterm infants. This finding supports the hypothesis that the gut-associated lymphoid tissue of preterm infants is ready to encounter food proteins and to begin the maturation process within 3-6 months of birth, regardless of the gestational age. Dichlorophenol-containing pesticides and allergies: results from the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2005-2006.
CONCLUSION: High urine levels of dichlorophenols are associated with the presence of sensitization to foods in a US population. Excessive use of dichlorophenols may contribute to the increasing incidence of food allergies in westernized societies. PMID: 23176881 [PubMed - in process]

Prevalence of food allergies in South Asia.
CONCLUSION: The medical literature on the prevalence and types of food allergy in South Asia indicates that there is a variety of unusual and unique allergens and an overall low incidence of food allergy. There is also an association of increased food allergy prevalence in individuals who live in metropolitan regions or who migrate to communities that have adopted westernization. Characterization of aspirin allergies in patients with coronary artery disease.
CONCLUSION: Histories of aspirin reactions in patients with CAD are uncommon, occurring in only 1.5% of our study population. The 21% of patients with histories compatible with aspirin hypersensitivities can be challenged and, if the results are positive, successfully desensitized. Moreover, almost all patients with gastric intolerance to aspirin can be treated with aspirin and a proton pump inhibitor. However, both approaches, which result in restoration of cardiovascular prophylaxis, were seriously underused in our study population. PMID: 23352527 [PubMed - in process]
