Story Generation and Narrative Retells in Children Who Are Hard of Hearing and Hearing Children
CONCLUSIONS: School-age CHH are at risk for delays in narrative production, particularly with retelling stories. The results of this study highlight a narrative coding approach and task procedures that are sensitive to differences in language levels and may be clinically useful for professionals working with early school-age children.PMID:37591235 | DOI:10.1044/2023_JSLHR-23-00084

Relating Acoustic Measures to Listener Ratings of Children's Productions of Word-Initial / ɹ/ and /w/
CONCLUSION: The weak relationship between automated F3-F2 difference and both listener ratings and narrow transcriptions suggests that these automated acoustic measures are of questionable reliability and utility in assessing preschool children's mastery of the /ɹ/-/w/ contrast.PMID:37591234 | DOI:10.1044/2023_JSLHR-22-00713

Profiling Number of Swallows per Bolus and Residue in Individuals With Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis
CONCLUSION AND INFERENCES: pALS demonstrated a higher number of swallows per bolus compared to healthy reference data that may represent a compensation for reductions in swallowing efficiency to clear pharyngeal residue.PMID:37591233 | DOI:10.1044/2023_JSLHR-23-00209

Reported Use of Second-Language Speech Accommodation in Everyday Interactions: The Role of Individual Differences
CONCLUSIONS: Results suggest that L1 speakers accommodate L2 speakers less frequently than previously reported. The data are discussed under communication accommodation theory.PMID:37591231 | DOI:10.1044/2023_JSLHR-23-00167

Treatment-Induced Recovery Patterns Between Nouns and Verbs in Mandarin-English Bilingual Adults With Aphasia
CONCLUSIONS: Findings from this study suggested robust treatment effects of semantic-based naming treatment targeting nouns and verbs in Mandarin-English BWA. However, patterns of treatment gains and generalizations differed between these word categories. This study provides strong evidence of bilingual aphasia rehabilitation in Mandarin-English BWA.SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIAL: https://doi.org/10.23641/asha.23818299.PMID:37591236 | DOI:10.1044/2023_AJSLP-22-00236

Partnering With Latino/a Caregivers and Community Stakeholders to Understand Priorities and Needs Prior to Implementing an Early Literacy Program
CONCLUSIONS: Staff and caregiver emphasized the resilience of Latino families and their strong values surrounding educational involvement. At the same time, participants also reported barriers and inequities rooted in systemic racism that have prevented families from being involved in certain aspects of the children's education. Together, these results revealed the importance of an early literacy program that is responsive to the structural inequities experienced by families.PMID:37591219 | DOI:10.1044/2023_AJSLP-23-00005
