Long-term survival in esophagectomy for early-stage esophageal cancer versus endoscopic resection plus additional chemoradiotherapy: a systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSIONS: The 2 groups showed no significant results in OS. Although we found that CRT may be suitable for patients with high-risk of relapse or unable to tolerate surgery, it cannot totally replace surgical treatment; further randomized trials are required to verify this view.PMID:37691683 | PMC:PMC10482624 | DOI:10.21037/jtd-23-376

Narrative review: respiratory tract microbiome and never smoking lung cancer
CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest potential carcinogenic processes such as increased inflammation associated with changes in flora. Additionally, studies showed that increase in certain taxa such as Bacteroides and Spirochetes might have a protective effect on lung cancer risk. The review also provides insight into how understanding the microbial changes can be beneficial for lung cancer treatment and disease-free survival. Larger studies in different populations need to be performed to strengthen the current associations between microbial diversity and lung cancer risk.PMID:37691669 | PMC:PMC10482636 | DOI:10.21037/jtd-22-885

The interplay of physical and cognitive function in rehabilitation of interstitial lung disease patients: a narrative review
CONCLUSIONS: Numerous underlying etiologies of ILD contribute to frailty, skeletal muscle and cognitive function, but their respective neurobiologic mechanisms require further investigation. Exercise training increases physical measures, but complementary approaches may improve their applicability to improve daily activities.PMID:37691666 | PMC:PMC10482628 | DOI:10.21037/jtd-23-209

Open and endovascular repair of thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm-a narrative review
CONCLUSIONS: Endovascular repair is associated with a higher reintervention rate than open repair. Surgeon and center volume and expertise are related to clinical outcomes and should be taken into consideration when deciding on surgical repair.PMID:37559662 | PMC:PMC10407483 | DOI:10.21037/jtd-22-1880

Extracorporeal life support in thoracic emergencies-a narrative review of current evidence
CONCLUSIONS: ECLS use in selected life-threatening thoracic emergencies is increasing. The summarized findings appeal to policymakers, and we hope that our summary of recommendations may impact clinical practice and research.PMID:37559625 | PMC:PMC10407525 | DOI:10.21037/jtd-22-1307
