Trend of immunity against measles and varicella zoster virus in healthcare workers in Korea
CONCLUSIONS: Measles seropositivity showed a substantial decline among HCWs born in 1985 or later, while varicella seropositivity remained high. The self-reported vaccination history was not sufficiently reliable for screening HCWs.PMID:37349224 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2023.06.018

Efficacy and effectiveness of Herpes zoster vaccination in adults with diabetes mellitus: a systematic review and meta-analysis of clinical trials and observational studies
CONCLUSIONS: In our meta-analysis of three observational studies LZV showed a 48% effectiveness in reducing HZ incidence in adults with diabetes whereas in a pooled analysis of two RCTs, RZV showed a 91% efficacy. No data are available on the effects of vaccination on the incidence and severity of HZ-related complications among subjects with diabetes.PMID:37340183 | DOI:10.1007/s00592-023-02127-7

Risk of herpes zoster according to past history in the general population: The Japanese Shozu herpes zoster study
J Dermatol. 2023 Jun 19. doi: 10.1111/1346-8138.16828. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTImmunity is known to persist after vaccination for varicella zoster virus, but the duration of immunity in patients who develop herpes zoster (HZ) remains unknown. To investigate the association between a past history of HZ and its occurrence in the general population. The Shozu HZ (SHEZ) cohort study included data for 12 299 individuals aged ≥50 years with information on their HZ history. Cross-sectional and 3-year follow-up studies were carried out to analyze the associations between a history of HZ (yes <10 years, yes ≥10 years, ...

Post-licensure safety study of new-onset immune-mediated diseases, herpes zoster, and anaphylaxis in adult recipients of HepB-CpG vaccine versus HepB-alum vaccine
CONCLUSIONS: This large post-licensure study did not identify evidence of safety concerns for HepB-CpG compared to HepB-alum for immune-mediated diseases, HZ, or anaphylaxis.PMID:37308363 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2023.06.004

Proceedings of the expert consensus group meeting on herpes zoster disease burden and prevention in India: An opinion paper
Hum Vaccin Immunother. 2023 Jun 9:2220608. doi: 10.1080/21645515.2023.2220608. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHerpes zoster (HZ) is a debilitating viral infection causing a dermatomal vesicular rash. Many known risk factors exist in India and adults >50 years of age may be especially susceptible to HZ. However, HZ is not a notifiable disease in India and data on incidence and disease burden is lacking. An Expert Consensus Group meeting was conducted with experts from relevant specialties to discuss HZ disease, its local epidemiology, and suggestions for implementing HZ vaccination in the Indian healthcare system. Current...

Causal evidence that herpes zoster vaccination prevents a proportion of dementia cases
medRxiv. 2023 May 25:2023.05.23.23290253. doi: 10.1101/2023.05.23.23290253. Preprint.ABSTRACTThe root causes of dementia are still largely unclear, and the medical community lacks highly effective preventive and therapeutic pharmaceutical agents for dementia despite large investments into their development. There is growing interest in the question if infectious agents play a role in the development of dementia, with herpesviruses attracting particular attention. To provide causal as opposed to merely correlational evidence on this question, we take advantage of the fact that in Wales eligibility for the herpes zoster vacc...

Do vaccinations influence the development of Alzheimer disease?
This article discusses the potential underlying mechanisms for this apparent protective effect of immunizations against infectious pathogens on the risk of AD; explores the basic and pharmacoepidemiologic evidence for this association, with particular attention paid to important methodological variations among the epidemiologic studies; and reviews the remaining uncertainties regarding the effects of anti-pathogen vaccines on Alzheimer disease and all-cause dementia, with recommendations for future directions to address those uncertainties.PMID:37291109 | DOI:10.1080/21645515.2023.2216625
