International Differences in the Frequency of COPD Exacerbations Reported in Three Clinical Trials
CONCLUSIONS: Countries contributing to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease trials differ consistently in their reporting of health care-defined exacerbations. These differences help explain why large studies have been needed to show differences between treatments that decrease exacerbation risk.PMID:35363593 | DOI:10.1164/rccm.202111-2630OC

Targeting Type 2 Inflammation and Epithelial Alarmins in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: A Biologics Outlook
Am J Respir Crit Care Med. 2023 Jun 22. doi: 10.1164/rccm.202303-0455CI. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTChronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a complex, heterogeneous, progressive inflammatory airway disease associated with significant impact on patients' lives, including morbidity and mortality, and significant health-care related costs. Current pharmacologic strategies, including first- and second-line therapies such as long-acting β2-agonists, long-acting muscarinic antagonists, inhaled corticosteroids, phosphodiesterase 4 inhibitors, and macrolides, provide relief in patients with COPD. However, many patients...

Nonspecific Interstitial Pneumonia: What Is the Optimal Approach to Management?
Semin Respir Crit Care Med 2016; 37: 378-394DOI: 10.1055/s-0036-1583176We reviewed current aspects of the clinical and pathogenic profile of nonspecific interstitial pneumonia (NSIP), to better elucidate the complex issue of management and treatment options for NSIP patients. Recent findings suggest that idiopathic NSIP is a complex clinical entity with a disease spectrum that includes at least three different phenotypes: NSIP associated with autoimmune features, emphysema, and familial interstitial lung disease. This distinction, based mainly on clinical findings, may be of critical importance when it comes to making a de...
