Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents for treating cystoid macular edema following cataract surgery
CONCLUSIONS: Evidence on effects of NSAIDs in patients with CME is very uncertain and further investigation is warranted. Our findings are limited by small sample sizes, and heterogeneity in interventions, assessments, and reporting of clinically important outcomes.PMID:36520144 | PMC:PMC9754896 | DOI:10.1002/14651858.CD004239.pub4

The RUC. "an Independent Group of Physicians?" - But It Includes Executives and Board Members of For-Profit Health Care Corporations and Large Hospital Systems
Introduction We just discussed how a major story in Politico has once again drawn attention to the opaque RUC (Resource Based Relative Value System Update Committee) and its important role in determining what physicians are paid for different kinds of services, and hence the incentives that have helped make the US health care system so procedurally oriented.  (See the end of our last post for a summary of the complex issues that swirl around the RUC.)The Politico article covered most of the bases, but notably omitted how the RUC may be tied to various large health care organizations, especially for-profit, and how the...

Association of breast arterial calcification with stroke and angiographically proven coronary artery disease: a meta-analysis
Objective: We conducted a meta-analysis of the current literature to deduce the strength of association between breast arterial calcification (BAC) and coronary artery disease (CAD) and/or stroke. Methods: PubMed, Google Scholar, ClinicalTrials.gov, and Ovid were searched for English-language literature up to August 2013 using the terms “breast arterial calcification,” “breast vascular calcification,” “coronary artery disease,” “coronary heart disease,” “cardiovascular disease,” “abnormal coronary angiography,” and “stroke.” A hand search of the reference lists of key articles was performed to s...

Single photon emission computed tomography for the diagnosis of coronary artery disease: an evidence-based analysis.
The objective of the analysis is to determine the diagnostic accuracy of single photon emission tomography (SPECT) in the diagnosis of coronary artery disease (CAD) compared to the reference standard of coronary angiography (CA). The analysis is primarily meant to allow for indirect comparisons between non-invasive strategies for the diagnosis of CAD, using CA as a reference standard. SPECT: Cardiac SPECT, or myocardial perfusion scintigraphy (MPS), is a widely used nuclear, non-invasive image acquisition technique for investigating ischemic heart disease. SPECT is currently appropriate for all aspects of detecting and man...

Computed Tomography Angiography for Aero-digestive Injuries in Penetrating Neck Trauma; A Systematic Review
CONCLUSION: CTA alone is not sufficient to exclude esophageal injuries in PNT. As delayed diagnosis is associated with increased morbidity, additional diagnostic interventions should be undertaken if there is remaining concern for esophageal injury.PMID:34021515 | DOI:10.1111/acem.14298
