Impact of Hospitalization in an Endocrinology Department on Vaccination Coverage in People Living with Diabetes: A Real-Life Study
Conclusions: Our real-life study highlights that hospitalization and multidisciplinary management (i.e., physician-pharmacist) may be key points in the diabetes care pathway to improve vaccination coverage, especially for patients with advanced diabetes and comorbidities.PMID:35208544 | PMC:PMC8879927 | DOI:10.3390/medicina58020219

Reactivation of varicella-zoster virus following mRNA COVID-19 vaccination in a patient with moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma of rectum: A case report
SAGE Open Med Case Rep. 2022 Feb 26;10:2050313X221077737. doi: 10.1177/2050313X221077737. eCollection 2022.ABSTRACTHerpes zoster which is the reactivation of varicella-zoster virus, a pathogenic human alpha-herpes virus, following primary infection or chicken pox, is known to occur especially in advanced age and in the immunocompromised among other predisposing factors. COVID-19 vaccination-induced immunomodulation is a novel scenario, hypothesized to be a result of shifting of T-lymphocyte population towards vaccine-induced naïve CD8+ subset, offsetting the balance of varicella-zoster virus responsive T-helper cells, the...

Incidence trend and disease burden of seven vaccine-preventable diseases in Shandong province, China, 2013-2017: Findings from a population-based observational study
CONCLUSION: Inequalities in the vaccine coverage by geography, socio-economic status, and targeted population contribute to the increasing incidence and high burden of VPDs and call for renewed and sustained immunization strategies in China.PMID:35243321 | PMC:PMC8867126 | DOI:10.1016/j.jvacx.2022.100145

Serial Thoracic Transforaminal Epidural Steroid Injections for Post-herpetic Neuralgia: A Case Report
Cureus. 2022 Feb 1;14(2):e21808. doi: 10.7759/cureus.21808. eCollection 2022 Feb.ABSTRACTThe chronic neuropathic pain of post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN) often persists for months or years after the acute herpes zoster (shingles) episode, may be severe and intractable, and can severely impact the overall quality of life. Antivirals, analgesics, and nerve blocks can effectively shorten the course of shingles and may help to prevent PHN. Although vaccination effectively prevents shingles and PHN, current therapies may be ineffective, and pain management can be challenging when PHN occurs. A 78-year-old female with severe PHN pa...

Direct Medical Costs of Four Vaccine-Preventable Infectious Diseases in Older Adults in Spain
CONCLUSION: The direct economic burden of herpes zoster, pneumococcal disease, influenza and pertussis in adults 45 years and older was high in Spain, and may be underestimated as it only considered medical assistance and not other applicable direct or indirect costs. Increasing vaccination rates in adults may potentially reduce the economic burden derived from these diseases, although future cost-effectiveness analysis including other disease-related costs, vaccination costs and vaccination effectiveness would be needed.PMID:35254649 | PMC:PMC8899779 | DOI:10.1007/s41669-022-00329-3

Global herpes zoster incidence, burden of disease, and vaccine availability: a narrative review
Ther Adv Vaccines Immunother. 2022 Mar 21;10:25151355221084535. doi: 10.1177/25151355221084535. eCollection 2022.ABSTRACTHerpes zoster (HZ) is a neurocutaneous disease that causes significant morbidity worldwide. The disease is caused by the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus (VZV), which leads to the development of a painful, vesicular rash and can cause complications such as post-herpetic neuralgia and vision loss. Globally, the incidence of HZ is increasing, and it incurs billions in cost annually to the healthcare system and to society through loss of productivity. With the advent of effective vaccines such as ...
