Comment on: National usage of bariatric surgery for class I obesity: An analysis of the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Progra"
The 1991 National Institutes of Health (NIH) consensus statement delineating criteria for metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) was critical to open access to life-saving surgical treatments for those suffering from obesity. Without compelling scientific evidence at the time, those recommendations included criteria now considered dubious such as psychiatric screening, integrated nonsurgical treatments, and strict BMI criteria with specific severe co-morbidity requirements (1).

Potential bias and lack of generalizability in electronic health record data: reflections on health equity from the National Institutes of Health Pragmatic Trials Collaboratory
J Am Med Inform Assoc. 2023 Jun 26:ocad115. doi: 10.1093/jamia/ocad115. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEmbedded pragmatic clinical trials (ePCTs) play a vital role in addressing current population health problems, and their use of electronic health record (EHR) systems promises efficiencies that will increase the speed and volume of relevant and generalizable research. However, as the number of ePCTs using EHR-derived data grows, so does the risk that research will become more vulnerable to biases due to differences in data capture and access to care for different subsets of the population, thereby propagating inequities in...

‘Ridiculous,’ says Chinese scientist accused of being pandemic’s patient zero
A scientist at China’s Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) who has recently faced media allegations that he was the first person with COVID-19 and his research on coronaviruses sparked the pandemic strongly denies that he was ill in late 2019 or that his work had any link to the emergence of SARS-CoV-2. “The recent news about so-called ‘patient zero’ in WIV are absolutely rumors and ridiculous,” Ben Hu emailed Science in his first public response to the charges, which have been attributed to anonymous former and current U.S. Department of State officials. A WIV colleague who has also been named as one of...

Increased plasma levels of circPTP4A2 and circTLK2 are associated with stroke injury
Ann Clin Transl Neurol. 2023 Jun 23. doi: 10.1002/acn3.51837. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOBJECTIVE: Accumulating studies have shown that circulating circular RNAs (circRNAs) represent novel biomarkers for many human diseases. We investigated whether plasma circPTP4A2 and circTLK2 levels are associated with stroke severity, infarct volume, stroke etiology, and functional outcome in acute ischemic stroke (AIS) patients.METHODS: We applied quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) to measure plasma circPTP4A2 and circTLK2 levels of 236 AIS patients within 72 h of symptoms onset and 136 healthy controls. We further assessed the Nat...
