An outpatient critical care transition clinic model reduces admissions/readmissions in medically complex patients
CONCLUSIONS: In patients with complex chronic medical conditions with recent hospital admissions, the HTC model appears to reduce both admissions and encounter costs. Further community/regional studies are needed to better define this observation on a longitudinal basis.PMID:34533912 | DOI:10.37765/ajmc.2021.88742

Individual and Neighborhood Characteristics of Children Seeking Emergency Department Care for Firearm Injuries Within the PECARN Network.
CONCLUSION: Among children receiving ED treatment within the PECARN network, there are distinct demographic and neighborhood factors associated with firearm injuries. Among younger children (<10 years old), unintentional injuries predominate, while assault-type injuries were most common among older adolescents. Overall, among this PECARN patient population, male adolescents living in neighborhoods characterized by high-levels of concentrated disadvantage had an elevated risk for firearm injury. Public health efforts should focus on developing and implementing initiatives addressing risk factors at both the individual an...

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease in America's Black Population.
Abstract America's black population can be traced back to Africa from where hundreds of thousands of Africans were brought to the United States (U.S.) from West Africa via the transatlantic slave trade. Currently, Blacks in America are a rapidly growing subset of the U.S. population and the growing black immigrant population has recently fueled this growth. COPD prevalence and morbidity vary widely among African Americans (U.S. born blacks) versus black immigrants (foreign-born blacks), but most studies have treated blacks in America as a homogeneous "African-American" population. This assumption ignores the dispa...

Pediatric Primary-Care Integrated Behavioral Health
Nearly half of US children and adolescents will suffer a behavioral health (BH) disorder, with substantially higher rates among more disadvantaged children such as racial/ethnic minorities, LGBTQ  + youth, and poor children. The current specialty pediatric BH workforce is inadequate to meet the need and the uneven distribution of specialists as well as other barriers to care, such as insurance coverage and systemic racism/bias, further exacerbate disparities in BH care and outcomes. Integr ating BH care into the pediatric primary care medical home has the potential to expand access to BH care and reduce the disparities i...

Recurrent and High-frequency Use of the Emergency Department by Pediatric Patients.
CONCLUSIONS: Risk factors for recurrent ED use by children include age, race and ethnicity, and insurance status. Although asthma plays an important role in recurrent ED use, acute illnesses account for the majority of recurrent ED visits. PMID: 24730398 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
