Her work paved the way for blockbuster obesity drugs. Now, she ’s fighting for recognition
When Svetlana Mojsov heard the spring 2021 announcement, she was startled. The Canada Gairdner International Award, a prestigious biomedical research prize, would be bestowed on three scientists for work underpinning the diabetes and obesity drugs that have exploded in popularity in recent years. “I was really upset,” recalls Mojsov, a chemist at Rockefeller University. The Gairdner award marked the third time in 4 years that the same trio of scientists—Joel Habener at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), Daniel Drucker at the University of Toronto, and Jens Juul Holst at the University of Copenhagen—were hon...

Contributions and limitations of FISH analysis for the diagnosis of central nervous system tumors according to the 2021 WHO classification: Feedback from Sainte-Anne Hospital's Department of Neuropathology
Ann Pathol. 2023 Jun 27:S0242-6498(23)00134-7. doi: 10.1016/j.annpat.2023.06.014. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe fifth edition of the World Health Organization (WHO) Classification of Tumors of the Central Nervous System has identified many new tumor types and has established, for the first time, essential and desirable diagnostic criteria for each of them. Among these, genetic alterations play an important role associated with morphology. For the first time, epigenetic data can also constitute essential and/or desirable criteria. These genetic abnormalities can be fusions, deletions or gains/amplifications and can thus...

Fish liver damage related to the wastewater treatment plant effluents
The objective of this paper is thus to provide an in-depth analysis of the WWTP contaminants' impact on the fish liver structure, physiology, and metabolism. The paper also gives an overview of the fish liver biotransformation enzymes, antioxidant enzymes, and non-enzymatic antioxidants, their role in metabolizing xenobiotic compounds and coping with oxidative damage. Emphasis has been placed on highlighting the vulnerability of fish to xenobiotic compounds, and on biomonitoring of exposed fish, generally involving observation of biomarkers in caged or native fish. Furthermore, the paper systematically assesses the most co...

Immunonutrition vs standard nutrition for patients with cancer
Nutr Clin Pract. 2023 Feb 14. doi: 10.1002/ncp.10963. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe prevailing belief in the value of immunonnutrition has been questioned as different patient populations show variable responses ranging from no benefit or even harm to significant improvements in clinical outcomes. The subject of this invited review is a previously published meta-analysis that showed important benefits from the perioperative use of an immunonutrition formula (defined as nutrition therapy that contains specific immune-modulating agents) in a distinct population: adult patients with cancer undergoing an elective major sur...

The clinical assessment of foreign body ingestions: Experience in a developing country
Trop Doct. 2023 Jan 3:494755221147355. doi: 10.1177/00494755221147355. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTForeign body (FB) ingestion is an important emergency in low- to middle-income countries. Our study sought to identify which clinical and radiological findings best predict upper gastrointestinal FB impaction. Amongst 149 adolescents and adults presenting to two Jamaican hospitals between 2018 and 2020, FB's were found at 31% of telescopic laryngoscopies and 60% of rigid oesophagoscopies. Commonest sites of impaction were the tonsils at laryngoscopy (15/46) and proximal oesophagus at oesophagoscopy (17/22). Odds of pharynge...
