Clinical and Economic Burden of Herpes Zoster in Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis: A Retrospective Cohort Study Using Administrative Claims
CONCLUSIONS: These findings highlight the high economic burden of HZ among individuals with RA in the United States. Strategies to reduce the risk of HZ in patients with RA (such as vaccination) may serve to reduce this burden. Video abstract.PMID:37219822 | DOI:10.1007/s40744-023-00549-x

Lower dementia risk in patients vaccinated against herpes zoster
Conclusions: Among patients ≥65 years of age, HZ vaccination is associated with a 31-35% reduced risk of dementia. Confirmation in other study designs is warranted. Results may be explained by nonspecific neuroprotection and vaccination training the immune system to limit damaging inflammation. Results highlight the importance of HZ vaccination.PMID:36696249 | DOI:10.1370/afm.20.s1.2680

Recombinant Zoster Vaccine Uptake and Risk of Flares Among Older Adults with Immune-Mediated Inflammatory Diseases in the United States
CONCLUSIONS: We did not find an increase in presumed flares following RZV vaccination. Among adults aged ≥50 years with IMIDs, a substantial proportion received RZV compared to general zoster coverage estimates and series-completion was high. This article is protected by copyright. Projected risks and health benefits of vaccination against herpes zoster and related complications in US adults
Hum Vaccin Immunother. 2022 Apr 27:1-5. doi: 10.1080/21645515.2022.2060668. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommends recombinant zoster vaccine (RZV) to prevent against herpes zoster (HZ) and related complications in immunocompetent adults ≥50 y and immunocompromised adults ≥19 y. In 2019, a statistical safety signal for Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) following RZV was identified using data from the Vaccine Safety Datalink (VSD). Subsequently, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and collaborators under...

Increased Risk of Herpes Zoster in Adults 50 Years Old Diagnosed With COVID-19 in the United States
CONCLUSIONS: We found that COVID-19 diagnosis in ≥50-year-olds was associated with a significantly increased risk of developing HZ, highlighting the relevance of maintaining HZ vaccination.PMID:35392454 | PMC:PMC8982770 | DOI:10.1093/ofid/ofac118

Real-world evidence on adherence and completion of the two-dose recombinant zoster vaccine and associated factors in U.S. adults, 2017-2021
CONCLUSIONS: Adherence and completion rates for RZV are suboptimal, especially for adults aged 50-64, racial/ethnic minorities, individuals with lower socio-economic status and those without Medicare insurance. More research and public health efforts are needed to understand and address potential barriers to RZV uptake, adherence and completion.PMID:35292160 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2022.03.006

Risk of Guillain-Barre syndrome following herpes zoster, United States, 2010-2018
This study provides new and methodologically rigorous epidemiologic support for an association between HZ and GBS, and useful context regarding the benefits versus potential risks of zoster vaccination.PMID:34856864 | DOI:10.1080/21645515.2021.1985890
