Outcome tools for diabetes-specific quality of life: Study performed in a private family practice clinic.
CONCLUSION: Finding ideal tools and procedures for routine data collection in the clinic setting requires organization and groundwork that will eventually assist both clinicians and researchers by providing reliable information on QoL for patients with diabetes. Further research is necessary to assess the validity and responsiveness of these tools specifically relating to evaluation of QoL for those with diabetes. PMID: 28615409 [PubMed - in process]

The feasibility and acceptability of nurse ‐led chronic disease management interventions in primary care: an integrative review
ConclusionLiterature supports the feasibility and acceptability of nurse‐led interventions in primary care for lifestyle risk factor modification. The ongoing sustainability of these interventions rests largely on organisational factors such as funding, educational pathways and professional support of the primary care nursing role. Further robust research around primary care nurse interventions is required to strengthen the evidence base. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Point-of-care testing in primary care patients with acute cardiopulmonary symptoms: a systematic review
ConclusionThere is currently limited and inconclusive evidence that actual GP use of POCT in primary care patients with acute cardiopulmonary symptoms leads to more accurate diagnosis and affects clinical management. However, some studies show promising results, especially when a POCT is combined with a clinical decision rule.

Barriers and facilitators among health professionals in primary care to prevention of cardiometabolic diseases: A systematic review
AbstractThe aim of this study is to identify potential facilitators and barriers for health care professionals to undertake selective prevention of cardiometabolic diseases (CMD) in primary health care. We developed a search string for Medline, Embase, Cinahl and PubMed. We also screened reference lists of relevant articles to retain barriers and facilitators for prevention of CMD. We found 19 qualitative studies, 7 quantitative studies and 2 mixed qualitative and quantitative studies. In terms of five overarching categories, the most frequently reported barriers and facilitators were as follows: Structural (barriers: time...

A change in a patient changed us all
It was another simmering-hot Texas day, and the AC was faltering in the family-practice clinic where I worked as a family nurse practitioner. Most of our clients were poor and spoke only Spanish. My nurse, Eliza, approached, wide-eyed.“There’s a new patient — a woman named Maraby. She seems really angry,” she murmured.“She’s the […]Find jobs at  Careers by KevinMD.com.  Search thousands of physician, PA, NP, and CRNA jobs now.  Learn more.

Net Revenue Generation for Hospitals on the Basis of Physician Speciality
I have previously blogged about the wait time for primary care physicians in the U.S. (see:PCP and Family Physician Wait Times increasing 50% in Many Markets) and the fact that many health systems may be limiting the number of PCPs on their staff because they do not generate as much revenueper capitaas specialized physicians (see: same reference as above). This is because PCPs don't perform procedures like surgeons or interventional cardiologists who are highly reimbursed by our healthcare system. Along these same lines, I came across an article that discusses hospital revenue generated per physician by speciality and ...

Death by 1,000 clicks: Where electronic health records went wrong
The pain radiated from the top of Annette Monachelli ’s head, and it got worse when she changed positions. It didn’t feel like her usual migraine. The 47-year-old Vermont attorney turned innkeeper visited her local doctor at the Stowe Family Practice twice about the problem in late November 2012, but got little relief. Two months later, […]Find jobs at  Careers by KevinMD.com.  Search thousands of physician, PA, NP, and CRNA jobs now.  Learn more.

Why do I love being a 43-year-old physician?
“Are you the doctor?” was the most frequently asked question I received from patients in my new practice. The second most common question was:“Are you old enough to be a doctor?” followed by the rather blunt question“How old are you?” I graduated from family practice (FP) residency in 2002 when I was 26-years-old […]Find jobs at  Careers by KevinMD.com.  Search thousands of physician, PA, NP, and CRNA jobs now.  Learn more.

Finding meaning in the intersection between marriage and medicine
When I first saw Jea-Hyoun, in a medical meet-cute straight out of a romantic comedy, she was being evaluated for thyroid cancer. I was an allergy/immunology fellow harried by a pile of paperwork. She was a patient, in the same building where she saw patients of her own as a psychiatry and family practice resident, […]Find jobs at  Careers by KevinMD.com.  Search thousands of physician, PA, NP, and CRNA jobs now.  Learn more.

Dear medicine: I ’m breaking up with you
I’m breaking up with you. I fell in love with you when I was just a child sitting in my grandfather ’s family practice office.
