The disappearance of gastric metastasis and liver metastasis in non-small cell lung adenocarcinoma is due to osimertinib
CONCLUSIONS: This is the first report to our knowledge of a patient who presented with gastric and hepatic metastases from lung cancer and achieved complete remission with osimertinib and local radiotherapy, with good quality of life, which also provides a basis for future clinical work and is of great significance.PMID:37695388 | DOI:10.1007/s00432-023-05386-7

Radiation-sensitive genetic prognostic model identifies individuals at risk for radiation resistance in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma
CONCLUSIONS: Our prognostic model based on a radiation-related gene signature has potential for application as a tool for risk stratification of radiation therapy for patients with HNSCC, helping to identify candidates for radiation therapy and overcome radiation resistance.PMID:37656244 | DOI:10.1007/s00432-023-05304-x

PD-L1 expression and prognosis in definitive radiotherapy patients with neuroendocrine cervical carcinoma
CONCLUSION: In patients with mixed NECC, positive PD-L1 expression is correlated with higher 3-year PFS. Chemoradiotherapy was effective for NECCs. The LNM and stage predicted PFS. Four or more cycles of chemotherapy improve prognosis. Prophylactic EFI did not significantly improve PFS and OS.RELEVANCE FOR PATIENTS: This study is relevant to patients as it confirms that chemoradiotherapy is effective for both early and locally advanced NECC and that four or more cycles of chemotherapy improved prognosis. The regimen should be carefully evaluated to ensure that patients receive the most effective radiation therapy for the p...

Tumor-targeted non-ablative radiation promotes solid tumor CAR T-cell therapy efficacy
In this study, we investigate the influence of tumor-targeted radiation on chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy tumor infiltration, accumulation, and efficacy in clinically relevant models of pleural mesothelioma and non-small cell lung cancers. We use a non-ablative dose of tumor-targeted radiation prior to systemic administration of mesothelin-targeted CAR T cells to assess infiltration, proliferation, anti-tumor efficacy, and functional persistence of CAR T cells at primary and distant sites of tumor. A tumor-targeted, non-ablative dose of radiation promotes early and high infiltration, proliferation, and func...

Early clinical trial unit tumor board: a real-world experience in a national cancer network
CONCLUSION: The ECTU Tumor Board is a feasible and successful network, highlighting the force of virtual patient discussions for improving patient care as well as trial recruitment in advanced diseases. It can provide further treatment options after local MTB presentation, aiming to close the gap to access clinical trials.PMID:37490102 | DOI:10.1007/s00432-023-05196-x

New immunotherapeutic approaches for cancer treatment
Pathol Res Pract. 2023 Jun 19;248:154632. doi: 10.1016/j.prp.2023.154632. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNeoplasms are a worldwide recognized non-contagious disease which has the most mortality rate after cardiovascular diseases. For decades, there has been a vast amount of study on treatment methods of cancer which has led to conventional therapies such as chemotherapy, radiation therapy, surgery and so on. Clinicians and researchers believed that there is an urgent need, considering the high rate of incidence and prevalence, for an alternative treatment option which is more efficacious and has less adverse effects than th...

Radiation therapy-induced neurocognitive impairment is driven by heightened apoptotic priming in early life and prevented by blocking BAX
Cancer Res. 2023 Jul 20:CAN-22-1337. doi: 10.1158/0008-5472.CAN-22-1337. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAlthough external beam radiation therapy (xRT) is commonly used to treat central nervous system (CNS) tumors in patients of all ages, young children treated with xRT frequently experience life-altering and dose-limiting neurocognitive impairment (NI) while adults do not. The lack of understanding of mechanisms responsible for these differences has impeded the development of neuroprotective treatments. Using a newly developed mouse model of xRT-induced NI, we found that neurocognitive function is impaired by ionizing radia...

The role of dendritic cells in radiation-induced immune responses
Int Rev Cell Mol Biol. 2023;378:61-104. doi: 10.1016/bs.ircmb.2023.02.002. Epub 2023 Mar 24.ABSTRACTDendritic cells perform critical functions in bridging innate and adaptive immunity. Their ability to sense adjuvant signals in their environment, migrate on maturation, and cross-present cell-associated antigens enables these cells to carry antigen from tissue sites to lymph nodes, and thereby prime naïve T cells that cannot enter tissues. Despite being an infrequent cell type in tumors, we discuss how dendritic cells impact the immune environment of tumors and their response to cancer therapies. We review how radiation th...
