Stroke and other cerebrovascular diseases are among the most common causes of death worldwide. Prevention of modifable risk factors is a cost ‑effective approach to decrease the risk of stroke. Antioxidant treatment in acute ischemic stroke may delay the onset of Alzheimer's dementia
(Bentham Science Publishers) There is a considerable overlap between vascular risk factors and risk factors of Alzheimer's disease (AD). In addition, incident stroke approximately doubles the risk of developing AD. Oxidative stress is significantly involved in the pathogenesis of AD and suffers a dramatic increase in the setting of acute ischemic stroke, especially in cardioembolic stroke, followed by lacunar stroke. Dampening this oxidative burst could delay the onset of subsequent dementia in stroke survivors.

Natural antioxidant bilirubin may improve cardiovascular health
(Emory Health Sciences) A recent analysis of health data from almost 100,000 veterans, both with and without HIV infection, found that within normal ranges, higher levels of bilirubin in the blood were associated with lower rates of heart failure, heart attack and stroke.
