Gastrointestinal Infection in South African Children under the Age of 5 years: A Mini Review
CONCLUSIONS: This mini review outlines the epidemiology and trends relating to parasitic, viral, and bacterial agents responsible for gastroenteritis in children in South Africa. An increase in sequence-independent diagnostic approaches will improve the identification of pathogens to resolve undiagnosed cases of gastroenteritis. Emerging state and national surveillance systems should focus on improving the identification of gastrointestinal pathogens in children and the development of further vaccines against gastrointestinal pathogens.PMID:37663241 | PMC:PMC10469397 | DOI:10.1155/2023/1906782

On the Treatment of Melanoma: A Mathematical Model of Oncolytic Virotherapy
Math Biosci. 2023 Sep 1:109073. doi: 10.1016/j.mbs.2023.109073. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWe develop and analyze a mathematical model of oncolytic virotherapy in the treatment of melanoma. We begin with a special, local case of the model, in which we consider the dynamics of the tumour cells in the presence of an oncolytic virus at the primary tumour site. We then consider the more general regional model, in which we incorporate a linear network of lymph nodes through which the tumour cells and the oncolytic virus may spread. The modelling also considers the impact of hypoxia on the disease dynamics. The modelling take...
