Primary structural features, physicochemical and biological properties of two water-soluble polysaccharides extracted from the brown Tunisian seaweed Halopteris scoparia
This study contributes to the evaluation of the biological and biotechnological potentials of two water soluble polysaccharides, namely alginates (AHS) and fucoidan (FHS), extracted and purified from Halopteris scoparia, an abundant Tunisian brown macroalgae collected in Tunisia (Tabarka region). The total sugars, neutral monosaccharides, uronic acids, proteins, polyphenols, and sulfate groups contents were quantified for both fractions, as well as their functional groups and primary structural features by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, ionic and/or gas chromatography and nuclear magnetic resonance analyses. AHS ...

Why does the herpes simplex 1 virus-encoded UL49.5 protein fail to inhibit the TAP-dependent antigen presentation?
Biochim Biophys Acta Biomembr. 2023 Jul 28:184200. doi: 10.1016/j.bbamem.2023.184200. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHerpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) is a well-studied herpesvirus that causes various human diseases. Like other herpesviruses, HSV-1 produces the transmembrane glycoprotein N (gN/UL49.5 protein), which has been extensively studied, but its function in HSV-1 remains largely unknown. The amino-acid sequences and lengths of UL49.5 proteins differ between herpesvirus species. It is, therefore, crucial to determine whether and to what extent the spatial structure of UL49.5 orthologs that are transporter associated wit...

Virus Infections in Older People
Subcell Biochem. 2023;103:149-183. doi: 10.1007/978-3-031-26576-1_8.ABSTRACTOlder people are more prone to viral infections, and often have worse outcomes. This was well demonstrated during the COVID-19 pandemic, where a disproportionate number of deaths occurred in the oldest and frailest people. The assessment of the older person with a viral infection is complicated by the high prevalence of multiple comorbidities and sensory or cognitive impairment. They often present with common geriatric syndromes such as falls or delirium, rather than the more typical features of a viral illness in younger people. Comprehensive geri...
