Non-Neurological Complications after Mechanical Thrombectomy for Acute Ischemic Stroke: A Retrospective Single-Center Study
CONCLUSION: In this large retrospective study of stroke, respiratory complications and pulmonary infections represented the most important non-neurological adverse events encountered in the ICU and associated with a risk of death.PMID:36590829 | PMC:PMC9803559 | DOI:10.1155/2022/5509081

Serum NT-Pro-BNP versus Noninvasive Bedside Inotropic Index in Paediatric Shock: A Contest of Myocardial Performance in Response to Fluid Loading
CONCLUSION: Higher NT-pro-BNP and lower SMII in the absence of cardiac diseases were associated with poor response to fluid loading. The SMII is affected by low preload conditions.PMID:34888103 | PMC:PMC8651364 | DOI:10.1155/2021/7458186

Current Physical Therapy Practice in the Intensive Care Unit in Saudi Arabia: A Multicentre Cross-Sectional Survey.
Conclusion: PTs reported significant variation in the choice of treatment for different clinical cases inside ICU. The main barriers in the ICU setting were low confidence and inadequate training. PMID: 33457013 [PubMed]

Bioreactance-Based Noninvasive Fluid Responsiveness and Cardiac Output Monitoring: A Pilot Study in Patients with Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage and Literature Review.
Authors: Sivakumar S, Lazaridis C Abstract Management of volume status, arterial blood pressure, and cardiac output are core elements in approaching the patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). For the prevention and treatment of delayed cerebral ischemia (DCI), euvolemia is advocated and caution is made towards the avoidance of hypervolemia. Induced hypertension and cardiac output augmentation are the mainstays of medical management during active DCI, whereas the older triple-H paradigm has fallen out of favor due to lack of demonstrable physiological or clinical benefits and serious concern for adv...

Free Fatty Acids in CSF and Neurological Clinical Scores: Prognostic Value for Stroke Severity in ICU.
Conclusion: FFA in CSF may serve as an independent prognostic biomarker for assessing the prognosis of acute ischemic stroke and the clinical outcome. It might be a useful biomarker for early detection of high-risk patients for poor outcome and hence more aggressive treatment. PMID: 32724675 [PubMed]

Institutional Incidence of Severe tPA-Induced Angioedema in Ischemic Cerebral Vascular Accidents.
Conclusion: This study found a higher incidence of severe angioedema than that reported. Development of severe angioedema increased length of stay but was not shown to worsen outcomes in regards to death. Consistent with previous studies, ACE inhibitor use was associated with a higher risk of developing angioedema. PMID: 30363665 [PubMed]

Update in the Early Management and Reperfusion Strategies of Patients with Acute Ischemic Stroke.
Authors: Mendez AA, Samaniego EA, Sheth SA, Dandapat S, Hasan DM, Limaye KS, Hindman BJ, Derdeyn CP, Ortega-Gutierrez S Abstract Acute ischemic stroke (AIS) remains a leading cause of death and long-term disability. The paradigms on prehospital care, reperfusion therapies, and postreperfusion management of patients with AIS continue to evolve. After the publication of pivotal clinical trials, endovascular thrombectomy has become part of the standard of care in selected cases of AIS since 2015. New stroke guidelines have been recently published, and the time window for mechanical thrombectomy has now been extended u...

Spectrum of Intracerebral Hemorrhage in Children: A Report from PICU of a Resource Limited Country.
We report our experience of ICH in children. Retrospective review of medical records of children (1 month-16 years) admitted in Pediatric Intensive Care Unit between January 2007 and December 2014 was done. Data collected included age, gender, presentation, examination findings, neuroimaging done (CT, MRI, and angiography) management (conservative/intervention), and outcome. Results are presented as frequency and percentages. Of the total 50 patients, 58% were male and 26% were <1 year. On presentation 44% had vomiting, 42% had seizures, and GCS < 8 while 40% had altered level of consciousness. Single bleed was prese...
