Benefit and risk of early intravenous heparin after thrombolysis in patients with acute ischemic stroke
ConclusionsIVH immediately after thrombolysis seems to be safe and potentially more effective as compared with standard ATT delay of 24  hr for a subset of AIS patients.

Acute stroke alert activation, emergency service use, and reperfusion therapy in Sweden
ConclusionAcute stroke alerts have a significant potential to improve stroke reperfusion rates. Prehospital stroke management varies conspicuously between hospitals and patient groups, and the elderly and patients living alone have a markedly reduced likelihood of stroke alerts. This nationwide study included 49,907 patients admitted with acute stroke who were registered in The Swedish Stroke Register (Riksstroke) in 2011–2012. Acute stroke alerts have a significant potential to improve stroke reperfusion rates. Prehospital stroke management varies conspicuously between hospitals and patient groups, and the elderly and ...

The stroke east Saxony pilot project for organized post‐stroke care: a case–control study
ConclusionsOur pilot data suggest that organized post‐stroke care enhances achievement of secondary prevention goals. Its possible effect on stroke recurrence, long‐term disability, and quality of life is currently investigated in a prospective cohort study. The Stroke East Saxony Pilot Project for Organized Post‐Stroke Care was case–control study to explore the feasibility of a self‐developed standardized post‐stroke pathway and its impact on secondary stroke prevention and long‐term outcome in patients with acute stroke. These pilot data suggest that organized post‐stroke care enhances achievement of sec...

U ‐curve relation between cholesterol and prior ischemic stroke
ConclusionOur hypothesis was falsified. The association between lower cholesterol levels and higher frequency of prior ischemic stroke in patients with cholesterol <5.5 mmol/L cannot be solely an effect of aggressive statin treatment in patients with prior ischemic stroke, as the association pertained also to patients who did not use statin. Previous studies on ischemic stroke patients have shown conflicting results concerning the association between cholesterol level and patient outcome. We hypothesized that acute ischemic stroke patients with increased cholesterol on admission more frequently had experienced prior i...

Long ‐term cost of spouses’ informal support for dependent midlife stroke survivors
ConclusionThe opportunity cost of informal support provided to dependent midlife stroke survivors is of a major magnitude many years after stroke onset and should be considered in economic evaluations of health care. In this article, we provide novel information about the quantity and content of long‐term informal support provided by spouses of midlife stroke survivors. The main finding is that the cost of informal support provided to midlife stroke survivors is of a major magnitude, even 7 years after stroke onset. We also show that the cost of the informal support is highly associated with the dependency (modified Ra...

Left atrial size and risk of recurrent ischemic stroke in a Chinese population
ConclusionLA size is an independent predictor of total recurrent ischemic stroke and the composite of recurrent cardioembolic or cryptogenic stroke. This study investigated the association of left atrial size with total recurrent ischemic stroke and recurrent cardioembolic or cryptogenic stroke in acute ischemic stroke patients. Results show that left atrial size was an independent predictor of total recurrent ischemic stroke and the composite of recurrent cardioembolic or cryptogenic stroke.

Factors associated with long ‐term mortality for stroke unit patients in Latvia
ConclusionAlcohol abuse as a pre ‐stroke risk factor, poststroke urinary incontinence as a neurological symptom, and dependence in grooming as a factor of disability were associated with earlier mortality in the first seven years after stroke.

Acute kidney injury after a stroke: A PRISMA ‐compliant meta‐analysis
ConclusionsAcute kidney injury appears to be a common complication after stroke and is related to increased mortality and disability in stroke. Additionally, high NIHSS score on admission and history of hypertension were the critical risk factors for the AKI after stroke. More large ‐scale studies should be made to explore AKI after stroke.

Characteristics of post ‐stroke dysphagia: A retrospective study based on FEES
ConclusionsThe infratentorial stroke may lead to worse swallowing function as compared to a supratentorial stroke. Additionally, patients with infratentorial stroke, PAS  >  5, PR ≥ 3, or vocal fold motion impairment may contribute to a longer duration of nasogastric tube placement.

Matrix metalloproteinase ‐9 gene polymorphisms are associated with ischemic stroke severity and early neurologic deterioration in patients with atrial fibrillation
ConclusionsThe incidence of moderate or severe stroke and END was very common in acute IS patients with AF.MMP ‐9 polymorphisms were independently associated with severe stroke and higher risk of END, and prestroke antithrombotic treatment was associated with less severe stroke and lower risk of END in patients with AF.

Changes in functional outcome over five years after stroke
ConclusionTransitions between ADL independence and dependency occur up to 5  years after stroke. Some of the factors predicting these transitions are potentially modifiable.

The association analysis between CYP24A1 genetic polymorphisms and the risk of ischemic stroke in Chinese Han population
ConclusionOur study gave the evidences thatCYP24A1 genetic polymorphisms were significantly associated with ischemic stroke patients, which would provide useful information of assessment or possible diagnostic markers for ischemic stroke.

Cerebral autoregulation is heterogeneous in different stroke mechanism of ischemic stroke caused by intracranial atherosclerotic stenosis
ConclusionIn IS patients, CA was impaired heterogeneously and was correlated with different risk factors in varied stroke mechanism. CA can be as an informative determinant of stroke risk in patients with ICAS and to help improving individualized treatment strategies in the presence of ischemic stroke caused by ICAS.
