Regulation of DAPK1 by Natural Products: An Important Target in Treatment of Stroke
Neurochem Res. 2022 Jun 8. doi: 10.1007/s11064-022-03628-7. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTStroke is a sudden neurological disorder that occurs due to impaired blood flow to an area of the brain. Stroke can be caused by the blockage or rupture of a blood vessel in the brain, called ischemic stroke and hemorrhagic stroke, respectively. Stroke is more common in men than women. Atrial fibrillation, hypertension, kidney disease, high cholesterol and lipids, genetic predisposition, inactivity, poor nutrition, diabetes mellitus, family history and smoking are factors that increase the risk of stroke. Restoring blood flow by repos...

Tetrandrine Attenuated Cerebral Ischemia/Reperfusion Injury and Induced Differential Proteomic Changes in a MCAO Mice Model Using 2-D DIGE.
Abstract Ischemic stroke is the most common type of stroke and brings about a big disease burden because of high mortality and disability in China. Tetrandrine, a bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloid isolated from the Chinese herb Radix Stephania tetrandra, has been demonstrated to possess anti-inflammatory and free radical scavenging effects and even regulate astrocyte activation, but the possible role of tetrandrine in ameliorating cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury of ischemic stroke remains unknown. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of tetrandrine on neurological injury and differential proteomic ...

Neuroprotection by Mucuna pruriens in Neurodegenerative Diseases
Neurochem Res. 2022 Apr 5. doi: 10.1007/s11064-022-03591-3. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe medicinal plant Mucuna pruriens (Fabaceae) is widely known for its anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory properties. It is a well-established drug in Ayurveda and has been widely used for the treatment of neurological disorders and male infertility for ages. The seeds of the plant have potent medicinal value and its extract has been tested in different models of neurodegenerative diseases, especially Parkinson's disease (PD). Apart from PD, Mucuna pruriens is now being studied in models of other nervous systems disorders such as Al...

Gastrodin Alleviates Cerebral Ischemic Damage in Mice by Improving Anti-oxidant and Anti-inflammation Activities and Inhibiting Apoptosis Pathway.
Abstract Gastrodin (GAS), an active constituent of the Chinese herbal medicine Tianma, has anti-oxidant and anti-inflammation activities but its protective effect to the prevention of neurotoxicity induced by ischemic stroke is unclear. In the present study, middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) was used to establish a mice ischemic stroke model. Infarct volume ratio and neurobehavioral score were evaluated, Nissl staining was performed and the expression of cleaved Caspase 3, Bax and B cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2) were assessed at 24 h or 7 days after reperfusion. In addition, the total superoxide dismutase (SOD) ...

Xueshuantong Injection (Lyophilized) Attenuates Cerebral Ischemia/Reperfusion Injury by the Activation of Nrf2-VEGF Pathway.
In conclusion, administered XST for 7 days after stroke could significantly improve functional recovery and promote angiogenesis, that might be related to Nrf2 signaling pathway. These findings could provide scientific evidence for the use of XST in cerebral ischemic diseases and provide theoretical support for further studies. Gastrodin Alleviates Cerebral Ischaemia/Reperfusion Injury by Inhibiting Pyroptosis by Regulating the lncRNA NEAT1/miR-22-3p Axis
Neurochem Res. 2021 Apr 11. doi: 10.1007/s11064-021-03285-2. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCerebral ischaemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury-induced irreversible brain injury is a major cause of mortality and functional impairment in ageing people. Gastrodin (GAS), derived from the traditional Chinese herbal medicine Tianma, has been reported to inhibit the progression of stroke, but the mechanism whereby GAS modulates the progression of cerebral I/R remains unclear. The middle cerebral artery occlusion method was used as a model of I/R in vivo. Rats were pretreated with GAS by intraperitoneal injection 7 days before I/R surgery...
