The differences of carotid atherosclerosis among non-OSAHS and OSAHS patients of different severities: a cross-sectional study.
CONCLUSION: As far as CIMT, carotid plaque, blood flow velocity, and blood lipid are concerned, the severity of CA is not affected by the severity of OSAHS accordantly. The relationship between OSAHS and CA may not be dose dependent. TRIAL REGISTRATION: This study has been registered on clinical trials (No. NCT03665818). Effects of central apneas on sympathovagal balance and hemodynamics at night: impact of underlying systolic heart failure.
CONCLUSION: Effects of central apneas on SVB during sleep depend on underlying systolic heart failure, with neutral effects in heart failure and increased sympathetic drive in idiopathic central apneas. PMID: 32700287 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Is there an association among sleep duration, nap, and stroke? Findings from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study.
CONCLUSION: In this elderly Chinese population, short total sleep duration per 24 h, not merely daytime napping or nighttime sleep, was significantly associated with an increased risk of stroke. Preventive measures for stroke may require a focus on elderly, sedentary individuals who report other health problems. PMID: 32562171 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Association between the high risk for obstructive sleep apnea and intracranial carotid artery calcification in patients with acute ischemic stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: This study showed that the presence of calcium in symptomatic intracranial ICA was related to high risk for OSA in patients with acute ischemic stroke. PMID: 32562170 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Association between sleep-disordered breathing and lower extremity artery disease: a meta-analysis.
CONCLUSIONS: Patients with SDB have higher odds of LEAD compared to non-SDB participants. PMID: 32399698 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Demographic, clinical, and biomarker predictors of apnea-hypopnea index from polysomnography in Midwestern sleep clinic patients.
CONCLUSIONS: BMI and systolic BP were significant predictors of OSA in this study. The absence of lung disease as a significant predictor was unique and may be due to the small number of participants who self-reported lung disease. To our knowledge, this is the first study to report this combination of variables to predict AHI levels ≥ 15 from PSG. PMID: 32193844 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Increased platelet activation in sleep apnea subjects with intermittent hypoxemia.
CONCLUSIONS: Increased platelet activation was present in otherwise healthy subjects with intermittent nocturnal hypoxemia due to underlying OSA. This prothrombotic milieu in the vasculature is likely a key contributing factor toward development of thrombosis and cardiovascular disease. TRIAL REGISTRATION: NCT00859950. PMID: 32036486 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Acute stroke and TIA patients have specific polygraphic features of obstructive sleep apnea.
CONCLUSION: Stroke patients had different characteristics of respiratory events, i.e., their polygraphic phenotype of OSA differs compared to matched reference patients. The observed differences in polygraphic features might indicate that stroke and TIA patients suffer from OSA phenotype recently associated with increased cardiovascular mortality. Therefore, optimal diagnostics and treatment require routine OSA screening in patients with acute cerebrovascular disease, even without previous suspicion of OSA. Evaluation of an OSA risk stratifying and treatment protocol during inpatient rehabilitation of post-stroke patients.
CONCLUSIONS: The use of APAP in high-risk patients was poorly tolerated and did not improve post-stroke recovery. Further studies with larger sample sizes are needed to determine the effect of APAP treatment on short-term recovery. PMID: 31290082 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Short- and long-term continuous positive airway pressure usage in the post-stroke population with obstructive sleep apnea.
CONCLUSIONS: We demonstrated that the long-term usage of CPAP therapy is possible with most of the attrition occurring in the first 3 months. Upfront healthcare resource allocation to CPAP initiation and usage in this population may improve longer-term usage. PMID: 30820850 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Self-reported snoring and incident cardiovascular disease events: results from the Jackson Heart Study.
CONCLUSION: In conclusion, self-reported habitual snoring was not associated with incident CVD among this large African American cohort. Future studies providing objective data on snoring and sleep apnea may provide more information on the snoring-CVD association among African Americans. TRIAL REGISTRATION: Identification Number: NCT00005485. PMID: 30756321 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Cognitive impairment and sleep disturbances after minor ischemic stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of PSCI is high after minor ischemic stroke. In particular, attention and working memory and executive function are most commonly impaired. Although the risk factors for PSCI are numerous, shorter total sleep time and degree of hypoxia at night warrant further attention. PMID: 30145676 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Risk of gallstones in patients with obstructive sleep apnea: a nationwide observational cohort study.
CONCLUSION: The study shows a strong association between OSA and gallstones. Moreover, our findings suggest the requirement for survey and health education for gallstones in OSA and further studies to verify whether the treatment of OSA can reduce the risk of gallstones. Association between insomnia and type 2 diabetes mellitus in Han Chinese individuals in Shandong Province, China.
CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests that insomnia is independently and significantly associated with diabetes mellitus in the northern Chinese population, especially in the 40-59-year-old age group and in males. PMID: 29961182 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Arousal index as a marker of carotid artery atherosclerosis in patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome.
CONCLUSIONS: Several PSG variables that are indicative of sleep fragmentation, sleep disordered breathing, and poor sleep quality correlated with the occurrence of atherosclerosis, but total arousal index was the only independent predictive factor. PMID: 29779142 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
