Validation of two risk-prediction models for recurrent falls in the first year after stroke: a prospective cohort study
Conclusionsboth models showed poor discrimination for predicting recurrent falls. A further large prospective cohort study would be required to derive a clinically useful falls-risk prediction model for a similar population.

Interaction of obstructive sleep apnoea and cognitive impairment with slow gait speed in middle-aged and older adults
Conclusionwe found that the inverse association between the time taken to walk 4 m and a cognitive score became significantly stronger, if an individual had OSA.

C-reactive protein level partially mediates the relationship between moderate alcohol use and frailty: the Health and Retirement Study
Conclusions: overall findings suggest that inflammation measured by CRP is one mechanism by which moderate alcohol use may confer protective effects for frailty. These findings inform future research relating alcohol use and frailty, and suggest inflammation as a possible mechanism in the relationship between moderate alcohol use and other beneficial health outcomes.

Simple prediction scores predict good and devastating outcomes after stroke more accurately than physicians
Conclusion</div>the FSV and PLAN scores are validated in this population for outcome prediction after both ischaemic and haemorrhagic stroke. The FSV score is the least complex of all developed scores and can assist outcome prediction by physicians.</span>

Important factors in predicting mortality outcome from stroke: findings from the Anglia Stroke Clinical Network Evaluation Study
Conclusions</div>there appears to be consistent and robust evidence of direct clinical benefit on mortality up to 1 year after acute stroke of higher numbers of trained nursing staff over and above that of other recognised mortality risk factors.</span>

Do studies of the weekend effect really allow for differences in illness severity? An analysis of 14 years of stroke admissions
Conclusions</div>the sorts of factors measurable in administrative databases only account for a small part of the prognostically important differences in case-mix between weekday and weekend stroke admissions. While increasing weekend staffing might improve adherence to care standards, evidence that it could save lives is unreliable.</span>

C-reactive protein is associated with disability independently of vascular events: the Northern Manhattan Study
Conclusions</div>in this large population-based study, higher serum CRP levels were associated with higher baseline disability, even when adjusting for baseline covariates and stroke and MI occurring during follow-up. Systemic inflammation may contribute to disability independently of clinical vascular events.</span>

Risk factors for low back pain and sciatica in elderly men—the MrOS Sweden study
Conclusions</div>in older men with LBP and SCI, anatomical abnormalities such as vertebral fractures, metastases, central or lateral spinal stenosis or degenerative conditions may only in part explain prevalent symptoms and disability. Social and lifestyle factors must also be evaluated since they are associated not only with unspecific LBP but also with LBP with SCI.</span>

Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy masquerading as cerebellar infarction
We report the case of a patient who present a stroke unit with symptoms that were consistent initially with a posterior circulation stroke. Prior chemotherapy with Rituximab, for a lymphoma, had predisposed the patient to infection with the JC virus. Physicians need to be aware of the condition, and patients need to aware of these risks of chemotherapy.

The 'Big Five. Hypothesis generation: a multidisciplinary intervention package reduces disease-specific hospitalisations from long-term care: a post hoc analysis of the ARCHUS cluster-randomised controlled trial
Conclusions: this generic intervention may reduce admissions for common conditions which the literature shows are impacted by disease-specific admission reduction strategies.

Four-year clinical results of transcatheter self-expanding Medtronic CoreValve implantation in high-risk patients with severe aortic stenosis
Conclusion: our study demonstrated favourable long-term (4 years) outcomes after successful TAVI using the third-generation Medtronic CoreValve device.

Safety and tolerability of Tilt Testing and Carotid Sinus Massage in the octogenarians
Conclusions: TT and CSM appear to be safe and well tolerated in octogenarians, who should not be excluded by age from the diagnostic work-up of syncope.

Changes in the in-hospital mortality and 30-day post-discharge mortality in acutely admitted older patients: retrospective observational study
Conclusions: the decline in hospital mortality in acutely admitted older patients was largely attributable to the lower in-hospital mortality, while the change in the mortality from discharge to 30 days post-discharge depended on the diagnosis. Separately reporting the two rate estimates might be more informative than providing an overall hospital mortality rate.

Efficacy and safety of apixaban compared with aspirin in the elderly: a subgroup analysis from the AVERROES trial
Conclusions: older patients with AF are at particularly high risk of stroke if given aspirin and have substantially greater relative and absolute benefits from apixaban compared with younger patients with no greater risk of haemorrhage.
