Independent risk factors for an increased incidence of thromboembolism after lung transplantation
ConclusionsThe incidence of TE after LTX is high, especially in lung transplant recipients with a BMI  >  25 and an age >  55 years as well as cardiovascular risk factors closely associated with the metabolic syndrome. As these patients comprise a growing recipient fraction, intensified research should focus on the risks and benefits of regular screening or a prolonged TE prophylaxis in these patients.Trial registration number DKRS: 00021501.

Comparing Velocity and Mean Arterial Pressure to Assess Pulsatility in Patients with Continuous Flow Left Ventricular Assist Devices
An increasing number of end-stage heart failure patients are supported by continuous-flow Left Ventricular Assist Devices (cfLVADs). In these patients, accurate assessment of arterial pulsatility remains a challenge because of diminished pulse pressure. Limited pulsatility in modern cfLVADs itself can be associated with adverse events such as stroke. Optimization of Left Ventricle Size After VAD Implantation Prevents Incidence of Cerebral Infarction
Stroke after ventricular assist device (VAD) implantation is a critical complication. Previous studies have noted the distance between the inflow cannula and the left ventricular (LV) septum, as well as an angulation of the inflow cannula from the apical axis, related to the incidence of stroke. In the early phase after VAD implantation, diuresis is caused by improved renal blood flow, furthermore, rapid volume reduction of LV greatly changes circulating plasma volume, resulting in increased stroke risk; however, little is known about an appropriate indicator for the prevention of this phenomenon.

Assessing Cardiac Recovery for Decommissioning of LVAD Support: Structure versus Function
Recovery of left ventricular (LV) function during LVAD support occurs in only 1-3% of patients. Assessment for recovery and LVAD removal is desirable given the risks of infection, stroke, and device malfunction. This case of a patient with an LVAD, with recovered LV systolic function but abnormal exercise hemodynamics, illustrates the potential utility of right heart catheterization studies for clinical decisions.
