The ethics of Canadian entry-to-practice pain competencies: how are we doing?
CONCLUSIONS: The lack of competencies related to pain has implications for advancing skillful and ethical practice. The lack of attention to pain competencies limits the capacity of health care professionals to alleviate suffering, foster autonomy and use resources justly. Influencing professional bodies to increase the number of required entry-to-practice pain competencies may ultimately have the greatest impact on education and practice. Final Year Nursing Students' Knowledge and Attitudes regarding Children's Pain.
Abstract Pain is one of the commonest reasons why children visit the hospital. Inadequately treated pain in children can negatively affect their physical, psychological, and social well-being; it also places financial burden on families of affected children and healthcare systems in general. Considering the eventual suffering of vulnerable children and their families if nursing students are insufficiently educated and ill-prepared, the current study aimed at assessing final year nursing student's knowledge and attitudes pertaining to pediatric pain. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 100 final...

Racial differences in pain treatment and empathy in a Canadian sample.
CONCLUSIONS: <⁄span> The results of the present study closely replicate those from a previous study of American observers, providing evidence that a prowhite bias is not a peculiar feature of the American population. These results also add support to the claim that empathy plays a crucial role in racial pain treatment disparity. PMID: 23248809 [PubMed - in process]

Chronic Pain in a Biracial Cohort of Young Women.
Authors: Plesh O, Gansky SA, Curtis DA Abstract This is a longitudinal study of a large US biracial community cohort of 732 young women - 50% African-American and 50% Caucasian - specifically investigating incidence, remission, and progression of, as well as factors associated with common chronic pains (back, head, face, chest and abdomen). The results show back, head and abdominal pains were the most common, severe and persistent pains. Facial pain, although less common and severe, was the only pain presenting significant racial differences with Caucasians having higher prevalence, incidence and persistence; incid...

Achieved Competencies and Satisfaction in Temporomandibular Disorders and Orofacial Pain Education.
CONCLUSION: This study has shown that expansion in undergraduate TMD and orofacial pain education at the dental school in Malmö has allowed all students to develop the same level of competence, independent of prior experience. The study also pointed out that continuous evaluation and enhancement of TMD and orofacial pain education in undergraduate dental education is beneficial. Gender bias in assessment of future work ability among pain patients - an experimental vignette study of medical students' assessment.
Conclusions Gender stereotypes influenced assessments of future work ability in pain patients, mainly because women were assumed to perform more domestic work which had a positive effect on perceived work ability. Because domestic work should have a negative effect on recovery, expectations from the physician that domestic work is expected by female patients may in fact have the opposite effect prolonging sick-leave. Moreover, the students trusted the male patients' ability to assess their own work capacity more than women's. Implications It is important that medical students receive education about gender biases and how t...

Transient Pain Following Orthodontic Fixed Appliances Induces Sensitization of Gingival and Periodontal Tissues.
CONCLUSION: This study indicates for the first time that pain following insertion of an archwire causes sensitization to blunt-pressure stimuli both in the attached gingiva and in the periodontal ligament. Quantitative assessment of mechanical sensitivity may provide more insights into procedural pain and allow for better monitoring and evaluation of the effects of orthodontic treatment in the future.
