The Role of Apathy and Depression on Verbal Learning and Memory Performance After Stroke.
Conclusions: These results suggest that apathy, not depression, is related to verbal memory performance in stroke patients. Future research should explore whether treatment of apathy (e.g., improving motivation) could be a novel target for improving cognition after stroke. Researchers should also examine whether this model can be applied to other aspects of cognition, including executive function and other areas of memory including autobiographical and working memory. Neuropsychological outcome following thalamic stroke in adolescence: an identical twin comparison.
CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest risk for deficits in encoding of new verbal information following bilateral thalamic stroke in adolescence, as well as risk for persistent cognitive deficits despite initial improvements. This is consistent with descriptions of anterograde memory impairments in adults with similar lesions. PMID: 30472911 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Parent experiences and developmental outcomes following neonatal stroke.
Conclusions: This study highlights the role of the neuropsychologist in the child's care in educating families and monitoring outcomes, emphasizes mental health support for parents of children with a history of neonatal stroke, and reiterates how environmental factors outside of the neonatal stroke itself can impact the child's functioning. Transcranial direct current stimulation as a novel method for enhancing aphasia treatment effects.
Neuromodulation is an exciting area of development. Currently, there is significant interest in academia, industry, and clinical practice where an effective and acceptable transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) kit for use in clinical rehabilitation would offer much benefit to patients’ treatment. In this review, I discuss the latest group studies investigating current tDCS methods for enhancing aphasia treatment effects in post-stroke (sub-acute and chronic) and primary progressive aphasia (PPA) patient populations. This field is still new, and many more investigations with larger samples of patients are needed....

Neuropsychology and Rehabilitation Services in the United States: Brief Report from a Survey of Clinical Neuropsychologists.
CONCLUSIONS: Prior published surveys suggest that clinical neuropsychologists have a growing involvement in rehabilitation services within the United States but with little clarity as to the actual characteristics of actual professional activities and practices. The present study aimed to provide such information and hopefully will be helpful in promoting additional systematic studies in this area. PMID: 28115326 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Posterior Cortical Atrophy with Right Lower Egocentric Quadrantic Neglect and Lower Vertical Allocentric Neglect.
We report a patient with probable posterior cortical atrophy who demonstrated lower right-sided quadrantic visuospatial neglect, together with allocentric vertical neglect. METHODS/RESULTS: A 68-year-old man initially noted deficits in reading and writing. Subsequently, he developed other cognitive deficits. On vertical line bisections, he deviated upward, and on horizontal line bisections, he deviated to the left. These deviations together suggest that this man's neglect might be most severe in his right (head/body-centered) lower (below eye level) visual space. When attempting to perform vertical line bisections in ...

The relationship of cognitive change over time to the self-reported Ascertain Dementia 8-item Questionnaire in a general population.
CONCLUSIONS: Incident cognitive impairment and high depression risk were the strongest predictors of self-reported positive AD8 in this population-based sample. Our results inform the utility of the AD8 as a self-report measure in a large, national sample that avoids selection biases inherent in clinic-based studies. The AD8 is screening measure and should not be used to diagnose dementia clinically. PMID: 32613226 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Clin Neuropsychol. 2021 Nov 18:1-33. doi: 10.1080/13854046.2021.2002934. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe purpose of this study was to investigate the demographic characteristics, academic training and types of professional activities of clinical neuropsychologists in Canada.282 participants completed an online-based survey.Respondents were women for the most part and had a mean age of 43 years. They typically had doctoral-level training (85%) and about one-quarter had postdoctoral training (23%). Nearly half (47%) had a lifespan practice, over one-third (37%) had an adults-only practice, and about one-sixth (16%) had an ...
