Pediatric Strokes: The Who, What, When, and Beyond...: A Patient and Family Guide
The prevalence of pediatric strokes, incidence of delay in treatment, and misdiagnosis has become an epidemic in healthcare. The purpose of this poster presentation is to provide education to healthcare professionals related to the extensive care required for pediatric stroke patients, from diagnosis until adulthood. As healthcare professionals, we must be educated and aware that pediatric strokes (one of the top 10 causes of death in children aged 1-19 years) occur and their recovery includes a multidisciplinary approach. We have developed an educational booklet for patients and parents that includes diagnoses through all...

Parastomal hernia and physical activity. Are patients getting the right advice?
This article draws on a large nationwide survey (2631 respondents) that investigated the physical health and wellbeing of people living with stomas in the UK. It specifically considers the findings relating to parastomal hernia (where additional loops of bowel protrude through the abdominal wall around the stoma, creating a bulge). In this survey, 26% of respondents reported that they had a medically diagnosed parastomal hernia, which is below average when compared with other estimates. The impact of parastomal hernia on physical activity levels was the most significant finding: 32% of those with a medically diagnosed hern...

Learned helplessness in doctors with dyslexia: Time for a change in discourse?
Dyslexia may be defined as a “learning difficulty that specifically impairs a person's ability to read … despite having normal intelligence” (National institute of neurological disorders and stroke, 2011; Dyslexia International, n.d.). It is a Specific Learning Difficulty (SpLD), which has an estimated international preva lence of 10% (Dyslexia International, n.d.; Wray et al., 2012). Within the United Kingdom (UK), it is protected by the Equality Act of 2010 and, therefore, employers are required to make reasonable adjustments to enable individuals with dyslexia to reach their full potential within their jobs (Great Britain, 2010).

What Is the Impact of Targeted Health Education for Mental Health Nurses in the Provision of Physical Health Care? An Integrated Literature Review.
Authors: Hennessy S, Cocoman AM Abstract Individuals with a severe mental illness have a gap in life expectancy of up to twenty years in comparison to the general population. Nurses who work in mental health services have been identified as best placed to improve the physical health outcomes of individuals with mental illness. The literature identifies a lack of nursing knowledge related to physical health care and the presence of metabolic syndrome which is impeding nurses in providing essential physical health care to patients. An integrated literature review was carried out due to the dearth of research evidence...

Correlations Among Self-Rated Health, Chronic Disease, and Healthcare Utilization in Widowed Older Adults in Taiwan
Conclusions/Implications for Practice: These findings identified that chronic diseases and healthcare utilization correlated strongly with self-rated health for widowed older adults. Take Care of Your Heart
February is American Heart Month, and since I am writing this in February, I decided it was time to focus on heart health. Cardiovascular disease (CVD; heart disease and stroke) results in 17.9 million deaths each year and is the leading cause of death globally.1 The number of global deaths is expected to increase to 23.6 million by 2030.1 Of particular interest to our female readers, heart disease kills more women each year than all forms of cancer combined. But nearly 80 percent of cardiac events can be prevented with education and lifestyle changes.

Existential analysis of mothers in the care of their children with Sickle Cell Disease.
Abstract OBJECTIVES: to unveil the experience of mothers of children who had a cerebrovascular accident due to sickle cell disease. METHODS: qualitative, phenomenological research based on Martin Heidegger's philosophical framework. Ten mothers participated in the Association of People with Sickle Cell Disease of Minas Gerais.
