Patient, operative and pain management factors influencing inpatient compared with surgical day care mastectomy procedures at a community hospital
CONCLUSION: We found no significant differences in surgical outcomes between inpatients and those with same-day discharge after mastectomy procedures. These findings add to the growing body of evidence that surgical day care mastectomy procedures are safe in the community setting.PMID:37500104 | DOI:10.1503/cjs.010422

Early treatment with N-acetylcysteine reduces hepatotoxicity in acute acetaminophen poisoning
We reported a case of a 15-year- old girl referred to our Emergency Department 3 hours after ingestion of 10 g of paracetamol for suicidal purposes. She promptly started the administration of intravenous N-acetylcysteine (NAC) and the patient was discharged after 5 days of hospitalization in good clinical condition and with neuropsychiatric follow-up. Our case shows that the timing of the intravenous NAC administration is considered the most important factor in the prevention of acetaminophen-induced hepatic failure, despite high serum levels after acetaminophen ingestion.PMID:37247196 | DOI:10.23750/abm.v94iS1.13714

Exploring the correlations between < em > epi < /em > indicators of COVID-19 and the concentration of pharmaceutical compounds in wastewater treatment plants in Northern Portugal
J Hazard Mater Adv. 2023 May;10:100315. doi: 10.1016/j.hazadv.2023.100315. Epub 2023 May 11.ABSTRACTThe COVID-19 pandemic caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus led to changes in the lifestyle and human behaviour, which resulted in different consumption patterns of some classes of pharmaceuticals including curative, symptom-relieving, and psychotropic drugs. The trends in the consumption of these compounds are related to their concentrations in wastewater systems, since incompletely metabolised drugs (or their metabolites back transformed into the parental form) may be detected and quantified by analytical methods. Pharmaceuticals...

Suspected Suicide Attempts by Self-Poisoning Among Persons Aged 10-19 Years During the COVID-19 Pandemic - United States, 2020-2022
MMWR Morb Mortal Wkly Rep. 2023 Apr 21;72(16):426-430. doi: 10.15585/mmwr.mm7216a3.ABSTRACTThe World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a global pandemic on March 11, 2020 (1). As strategies to mitigate the pandemic were implemented, concerns were raised that the containment efforts through quarantine and social distancing practices were negatively affecting the mental and physical health of children and adolescents (2). Suicide is a growing public health problem in the United States. In 2020, suicide was the second leading cause of death among persons aged 10-14 years and the third leading cause among those aged 15-24 ...
