Neonatal opioid toxicity: opioid withdrawal (abstinence) syndrome with emphasis on pharmacogenomics and respiratory depression
Arch Toxicol. 2023 Aug 3. doi: 10.1007/s00204-023-03563-8. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe increasing use of opioids in pregnant women has led to an alarming rise in the number of cases of neonates with drug-induced withdrawal symptoms known as neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome (NOWS). NOWS is a toxic heterogeneous condition with many neurologic, autonomic, and gastrointestinal symptoms including poor feeding, irritability, tachycardia, hypertension, respiratory defects, tremors, hyperthermia, and weight loss. Paradoxically, for the management of NOWS, low doses of morphine, methadone, or buprenorphine are administered...

Involvement of DPP3 in modulating oncological features and oxidative stress response in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma
This study aimed to determine the expression pattern and functional role of DPP3 in ESCC. DPP3 expression was assessed in normal and tumor tissues using qRT-PCR and corroborated with ESCC gene expression datasets from GEO and TCGA. DPP3 stable knockdown was performed in ESCC cells by shRNA and its effect on cell proliferation, migration, cell cycle, apoptosis, and activation of nuclear factor erythroid 2- related factor 2 (NRF2) pathway was assessed. The results suggested that DPP3 knockdown lead to reduced proliferation, increased apoptosis, and inhibited migration of ESCC cells. Additionally, DPP3 knockdown led to downre...

A service evaluation of the impact of parental information provision on analgesia administration at home posttonsillectomy
CONCLUSION: The breadth of unmet information needs identified in this service evaluation, alongside parental suggestions, will be used to improve the current written advice with the aim to improve the postoperative pain experience at home. These include information on length of analgesic course, safety of ibuprofen and paracetamol coadministration for analgesia, and details about morphine administration, including safety, side effects, and indication.PMID:37528615 | DOI:10.1111/pan.14693

An alternative to opioid-based intravenous patient controlled analgesia in severe burn patients undergoing full thickness split graft in upper limbs
CONCLUSION: Our study demonstrated that in patients requiring high dosage of opioid, CPNB may be a suitable alternative for pain control.PMID:37525929 | DOI:10.2340/jphs.v58.12292
