Impact of novel microbial secondary metabolites on the pharma industry
Appl Microbiol Biotechnol. 2022 Feb 21. doi: 10.1007/s00253-022-11821-5. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMicroorganisms are remarkable producers of a wide diversity of natural products that significantly improve human health and well-being. Currently, these natural products comprise half of all the pharmaceuticals on the market. After the discovery of penicillin by Alexander Fleming 85 years ago, the search for and study of antibiotics began to gain relevance as drugs. Since then, antibiotics have played a valuable role in treating infectious diseases and have saved many human lives. New molecules with anticancer, hypocholes...

Comment: Sedation as part of secondary prophylaxis to prevent recurrent rheumatic fever in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples: time for a reset?
Rural Remote Health. 2022 Jan;22(1):6866. doi: 10.22605/RRH6866. Epub 2022 Jan 20.ABSTRACTAustralia's national clinical practice guidelines recommend intramuscular (IM) penicillin every 28 days for persons diagnosed with an initial episode of acute rheumatic fever (ARF). This antibiotic coverage is initiated to reduce recurrent ARF episodes by preventing repeat infections with the causative bacterium, group A Streptococcus. Because disease has already occurred, this regimen is known as secondary prophylaxis (SP), done in order to prevent more episodes of ARF (known as recurrences). In 2020, eight authors shared with reader...

Variation in practice for preoperative antibiotic prophylaxis: a survey from an academic tertiary referral center in the United States
CONCLUSIONS: There is no clear consensus amongst providers for which antibiotic to administer for antibiotic prophylaxis despite existing guidelines. Discrepancy also exists between orthopaedic surgery and anesthesia providers in regards to appropriate antibiotic choice for patients with reported penicillin allergies. Institutions should implement evidence-based protocols for preoperative antibiotic prophylaxis and continue to prospectively monitor compliance in order to identify any inconsistencies that could result in inappropriate antibiotic prophylaxis for patients.PMID:34706755 | PMC:PMC8549297 | DOI:10.1186/s13037-021-00308-3
