Effectiveness of Pharmacologic Interventions in the Management of Weight Gain in Patients With Severe Mental Illness: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.
Conclusions: Metformin and topiramate were the most-studied agents for weight control in SMI and were considered efficacious and safe in promoting weight reduction compared to placebo in this population. More studies are required with larger sample sizes and in line with the recommendations from research from the obesity and metabolic field to better define guidelines for use of pharmacologic interventions to reduce weight gain in patients with SMI. News at a glance: Long Covid treatment, global earthquake model, and deep-sea mining
MARINE SCIENCE Ocean mining ban sought Europe’s top science advisory panel last week called for a moratorium on commercial deep-sea mining, arguing that its environmental impacts are poorly understood and that critical clean energy minerals can be harvested from mines on land. According to some forecasts, only the highest demand scenarios for minerals used in renewable power and electric vehicles require supplies from the deep sea, says the report from the European Academies’ Science Advisory Council. Next month, the United Nations’s International Seabed Authority (ISA) will consider a moratorium in in...

JAMIA: Reduction in medication errors in hospitals due to adoption of computerized provider order entry systems
This study appears reasonable for inclusion in a meta-analysis, although ideally there might have been accounting for possible influence of non-intervention (computer)-related pre-post interval changes.  The transition to CPOE, training, increased awareness, etc. can influence results, especially short term. Included study #7 (footnote 16):Error reduction in pediatric chemotherapy: computerized order entry and failure modes and effects analysis. Arch Pediatr Adolesc Med 2006;160:495–8.Before-and-after study from 2001 to 2004. After CPOE deployment, daily chemotherapy orders were less likely to have improper dos...

My Husband Outlived His Brain Tumor Prognosis by 12 Years: How His Experience Could Help John McCain and Others
In conclusion, I would never advise John McCain and his family, or any other GBM patient, as to which of these treatments—or which combination of treatments—they should use. I hope they will learn about all of them, and decide on their own which one or ones they would like to try. I would also encourage them to do their own research, or to hire a researcher with experience in finding sensible, science-based, cutting-edge treatments. I am very worried that they will not know about these treatments, and others like them, and will just use the standard of care. That would be a shame. It might also be a death sentence.

Why Food Could Be the Best Medicine of All
When Tom Shicowich’s toe started feeling numb in 2010, he brushed it off as a temporary ache. At the time, he didn’t have health insurance, so he put off going to the doctor. The toe became infected, and he got so sick that he stayed in bed for two days with what he assumed was the flu. When he finally saw a doctor, the physician immediately sent Shicowich to the emergency room. Several days later, surgeons amputated his toe, and he ended up spending a month in the hospital to recover. Shicowich lost his toe because of complications of Type 2 diabetes as he struggled to keep his blood sugar under control. He wa...
