Effectiveness of Intensive Rehabilitation Therapy on Functional Outcomes After Stroke: A Propensity Score Analysis Based on Japan Rehabilitation Database
This study was a retrospective cohort study. From the database, 6875 patients who were admitted to the convalescent rehabilitation wards with stroke were identified. After excluding 4586 patients, 2325 were eligible for the study. Intensive rehabilitation therapy (IRT) was defined as rehabilitation therapy of more than 15 hours per week by a physical therapist, an occupational therapist, and/or a speech therapist.

Quality Management Program of Stroke Rehabilitation Using Adherence to Guidelines: A Nationwide Initiative in Japan
In recent years, interest in the quality of medical care has rapidly increased worldwide. However, quality indicators that contribute to establishing standard treatment in stroke medicine, especially rehabilitation, are not well-developed in Japan. Japan has established Kaifukuki (convalescent) rehabilitation wards, and the development of quality indicators for stroke rehabilitation in the convalescent phase is an urgent issue.

Letter to the Editor Regarding “Relationship of Malnutrition during Hospitalization with Functional Recovery and Postdischarge Destination in Elderly Stroke Patients”
We read with great interest the article by Sato et al on the relationship of malnutrition with acute stroke in 205 patients hospitalized at the Shinshu University hospital, Japan.1 We would like to provide an additional nationwide United States (US) perspective on outcomes of hospitalized stroke patients with protein energy malnutrition (PEM).

Prevalence and Predictors of Multivitamin Supplement Use After Stroke in Ghana
Multivitamin supplementation is widely practiced in high-income countries due to a popular belief of its health promotion and disease prevention benefits. Evidence for their purported efficacy has been mixed. Regarding the efficacy of multivitamins on prevention of cardiovascular disease, cancer, or all-cause mortality, some studies have shown no effect,1 –4 harmful effects,5,6 and beneficial effects.7,8 Three prospective studies have evaluated the effect of multivitamin use on stroke prevention with two showing negative outcomes3,5 and the third among 72,000 Japanese showing frequent use of multivitamins was associated ...

Outcome of Acute Ischemic Stroke after the Treatment with Edaravone and 0.6 Mg/Kg Alteplase in Japanese Patients with Diabetes
We investigated how diabetes mellitus (DM) affects the outcome of acute ischemic stroke (AIS), comparing with the outcomes in those who had hypertension (HT) and atrial fibrillation (AF).

A Case of Posterior Circulation Ischemic Stroke Caused by Heparin-Induced Thrombocytopenia after Detaining Hepatic Arterial Infusion Catheter
In Japan, hepatic arterial infusion chemotherapy (HAIC) using reservoir system is recommended for patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) whose hepatic spare ability is favorable. Arterial infusion catheter is commonly detained in hepatic artery via femoral or brachial artery. In our hospital, catheter is often inserted by puncturing the left subclavian or brachial artery considering the patient's activities of daily living (ADL) during long-term detaining. However, it rarely causes posterior circulation ischemic stroke because of the left vertebral artery branches on the path of catheter.

Japanese Versus Non-Japanese Patients with Transient Ischemic Attack or Minor Stroke: Subanalysis of TIA registry.org
TIAregistry.org is an international cohort of patients with transient ischemic attack (TIA) or minor stroke within 7 days before enrollment in the registry. Main analyses of 1-year follow-up data have been reported.5 We conducted subanalysis on the baseline and 1-year follow-up data of Japanese patients.

Ten-Year Cerebrovascular Disease Trend Occurrence by Population-based Stroke Registry in an Aging Japan Local Prefecture
Background: Cerebrovascular diseases are a major cause of death for Japanese people, but up-to-date national or prefectural incidences are unknown. We calculated the last 10-year cerebrovascular diseases incidence in an aging local prefecture in Japan with 1.2 million inhabitants and used the data to predict the future incidence. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed inventory surveys from the Iwate Stroke Registry (data from the whole Iwate Prefecture) from 2008 to 2017. We compared age-adjusted and age-specific incidence rates between the first half period from 2008 to 2012 and the last half period from 2013 to 2017.

Outcome and effect of endovascular treatment in stroke associated with acute extracranial internal carotid artery occlusion: Single-center experience in Japan
Positive data from several randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of endovascular treatment (EVT) for acute ischemic stroke (AIS) patients with anterior circulation large vessel occlusion (ACLVO) have emerged. However, little evidence exists on EVT for acute extracranial internal carotid artery (EC-ICA) occlusion. We therefore analysed the outcome and effect of EVT on AIS due to ACLVO caused by EC-ICA occlusion, including tandem occlusion compared with that caused by pure intracranial artery occlusion.
