Neuropsychological performance after carotid endarterectomy
Conclusions: CEA not only decreases the long-term risk of ischemic stroke, but may also improve cognitive performance. In a small percentage of cases, there is higher risk of embolic stroke and silent microembolization due to surgery, which may have a negative impact on cognitive function. However, we did not detect any cognitive impairment after CEA in our patients.PMID:35164472 | DOI:10.31083/j.jin2101036

Cardiac papillary fibroelastomas: A 10-year single-center surgical experience and long-term echocardiographic follow-up study.
CONCLUSION: CPF can be safely and effectively treated surgically. TEE is superior to the TTE option in CPF post-operative recurrence detection. There is a clear need for a prospective study to determine criteria for embolization risk stratification and optimum management in patients with CPF. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTParadoxical embolism is one of the predominant causes of cryptogenic stroke and interventional secondary prevention, i.e., closure of the patent foramen ovale (PFO), is a much discussed issue. This review aims to provide a complex perspective on this topic, aggregates and comments on the available data and current guidelines. Several large trials were performed, some of which proved the superiority of PFO closure over pharmacotherapy while others have not. Studies detecting significant superiority of in...
