Integration of palliative care in the management of oral squamous cell carcinoma
Bioinformation. 2023 Jan 31;19(1):1-4. doi: 10.6026/97320630019001. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTOral Squamous cell Cancers (OSCC) is strongly associated with tobacco consumption. We here in present a case study of a OSCC patient who refused standard oncological care (SOC), to highlight the importance of integrating palliative care (PC) for improved patient outcomes. A 61 years male patient, with history of chewing tobacco for more than 20 years and diagnosed to have OSCC for 1.5 years presented with severe anaemia and a cauliflower-like growth (12 x 10 cm) in the left oral cavity and cheek with greenish-yellow discharge. Pus ...

Clinical phenotypes and quality of life to define post-COVID-19 syndrome: a cluster analysis of the multinational, prospective ORCHESTRA cohort
EClinicalMedicine. 2023 Jul 21;62:102107. doi: 10.1016/j.eclinm.2023.102107. eCollection 2023 Aug.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Lack of specific definitions of clinical characteristics, disease severity, and risk and preventive factors of post-COVID-19 syndrome (PCS) severely impacts research and discovery of new preventive and therapeutics drugs.METHODS: This prospective multicenter cohort study was conducted from February 2020 to June 2022 in 5 countries, enrolling SARS-CoV-2 out- and in-patients followed at 3-, 6-, and 12-month from diagnosis, with assessment of clinical and biochemical features, antibody (Ab) response, Variant o...

A novel therapeutic management for diabetes patients with chronic limb-threatening ischemia: comparison of autologous bone marrow mononuclear cells versus allogenic Wharton jelly-derived mesenchymal stem cells
CONCLUSIONS: Our results showed that patients with CLTI treated with auto-BM-MNC and allo-WJ-MSCs conserved 100% of their limb during 12 months of the follow-up compared to the placebo group, where 60% of participants underwent limb amputation in different times. Furthermore, we observed a faster improvement in the allo-WJ-MSC group, unlike the auto-BM-MNC group. Trial registration This study was retrospectively registered at ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT05631444).PMID:37626416 | DOI:10.1186/s13287-023-03427-z

Current aspects of small extracellular vesicles in pain process and relief
Biomater Res. 2023 Aug 10;27(1):78. doi: 10.1186/s40824-023-00417-3.ABSTRACTSmall extracellular vesicles (sEVs) have been identified as a noteworthy paracrine mechanism of intercellular communication in diagnosing and managing neurological disorders. Current research suggests that sEVs play a pivotal role in the pathological progression of pain, emphasizing their critical function in the pathological progression of pain in acute and chronic pain models. By facilitating the transfer of diverse molecules, such as proteins, nucleic acids, and metabolites, sEVs can modulate pain signaling transmission in both the central and p...

Exosomal microRNAs and long noncoding RNAs: as novel biomarkers for endometriosis
Cell Tissue Res. 2023 Jul 22. doi: 10.1007/s00441-023-03802-5. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEndometriosis is a gynecological inflammatory disorder characterized by the development of endometrial-like cells outside the uterine cavity. This disease is associated with a wide range of clinical presentations, such as debilitating pelvic pain and infertility issues. Endometriosis diagnosis is not easily discovered by ultrasound or clinical examination. Indeed, difficulties in noninvasive endometriosis diagnosis delay the confirmation and management of the disorder, increase symptoms, and place a significant medical and financia...

Manifestation of acute appendicitis as known but paradox visceral side effect of ulcerative colitis anti-inflammatory therapy with januskinase-inhibitor Tofacitinib (Xeljanz ™)
CONCLUSION: Based on the paradoxon of an acute inflammatory disease (acute appendicitis) seen in the case of a patient undergoing immunosuppressive/anti-inflammatory treatment using a JAK-Inhibitor for ulcerative colitis, we consider this case worthy of publication although this side effect has previously been described in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. This might be the manifestation of i) an immunomodulatory effect that reduced or at least altered mucosal defense, including an increased risk of opportunistic infections, presenting as a specific visceral 'side effect' of the JAK-Inhibitor and/or as a consequence; ii)...

Clinical characteristics, management, and outcomes of patients with primary cardiac angiosarcoma: A systematic review
J Cardiovasc Thorac Res. 2023;15(1):1-8. doi: 10.34172/jcvtr.2023.30531. Epub 2023 Mar 16.ABSTRACTPrimary cardiac angiosarcomas (PCA) are highly aggressive malignant heart tumors. Previous reports have shown a poor prognosis regardless of management, and no consensus or guidelines exist. It is necessary to clarify this information since patients with PCA have a short survival. Therefore, we aimed to systematically review clinical manifestations, management, and outcomes. We systematically searched in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and EMBASE. We intended to include cross-sectional studies, case-control studies, cohort stu...

Ion channels involved in inflammation and pain in osteoarthritis and related musculoskeletal disorders
Am J Physiol Cell Physiol. 2023 Jun 12. doi: 10.1152/ajpcell.00040.2023. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOsteoarthritis (OA) is a currently incurable, chronic, progressive and debilitating musculoskeletal condition. One of its hallmark symptoms is chronic nociceptive and neuropathic pain, which significantly reduces the quality of life of OA patients. While research into the pathomechanisms of OA pain is ongoing and several pain pathways are well understood, the true source of OA pain remains unclear. Ion channels and transporters are key mediators of nociceptive pain. In this narrative review article, we summarize the state...
