The Connection Between Social Determinants of Health and Human Papillomavirus Testing Knowledge Among Women in the USA
This study examines awareness and knowledge that US women possess regarding HPV testing using the social determinants of health (SDOH) framework. Women aged 30 to 65 years, without hysterectomy, completed an online survey (N = 812). The outcome variables included HPV testing awareness and HPV testing knowledge, a six-item validated scale. Provider Confidence and Perceived Barriers when Recommending the Human Papillomavirus Vaccine to Parents
Abstract Provider recommendation for the HPV vaccine is considered a critical determinant of vaccine uptake compared to other interventions such as parent education. However, providers cite continued barriers to discuss the vaccines with parents including sexual concerns and other misconceptions. The purpose of this mixed methods study was to evaluate physician knowledge and comfort discussing the vaccine with parents and perceived barriers to vaccine uptake among pediatric residents and attending physicians at a university-affiliated county health clinic. Physicians completed surveys guided by HPV Roundtable information...

Updated estimate of the annual direct medical cost of screening and treatment for human papillomavirus associated disease in the United States
Vaccine. 2023 Mar 10:S0264-410X(23)00184-6. doi: 10.1016/j.vaccine.2023.02.049. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe annual direct medical cost attributable to human papillomavirus (HPV) in the United States over the period 2004-2007 was estimated at $9.36 billion in 2012 (updated to 2020 dollars). The purpose of this report was to update that estimate to account for the impact of HPV vaccination on HPV-attributable disease, reductions in the frequency of cervical cancer screening, and new data on the cost per case of treating HPV-attributable cancers. Based primarily on data from the literature, we estimated the annual direc...

End-Stage Renal Disease: Medical Management
Am Fam Physician. 2021 Nov 1;104(5):493-499.ABSTRACTEnd-stage renal disease (ESRD) is diagnosed when kidney function is no longer adequate for long-term survival without kidney transplantation or dialysis. Primary care clinicians should refer people at risk of ESRD to nephrology to optimize disease management. Kidney transplantation typically yields the best patient outcomes, although most patients are treated with dialysis. The decision to initiate dialysis is best made through shared decision-making. Because most patients with ESRD elect to receive hemodialysis, the preservation of peripheral veins is important for those...
