Cytomegalovirus-Associated Hemophagocytic Syndrome Diagnosed by Liver Biopsy in a Kidney Transplant Recipient
Yonsei Med J. 2021 Mar;62(3):274-277. doi: 10.3349/ymj.2021.62.3.274.ABSTRACTHemophagocytic syndrome (HPS) is a rare but potentially life-threatening disease in kidney transplant recipients, and is caused by systemic proliferation of macrophages actively phagocytizing other blood cells in the bone marrow, lymph nodes, and the spleen. Here, we report a 40-year-old male kidney transplant recipient who presented with fever, bicytopenia, and elevated liver enzymes 2 months after transplantation. Given that cytomegalovirus antigenemia and real-time polymerase chain reaction tests were positive, liver biopsy was performed under ...

Liver transplantation in patients with neuroendocrine tumors: a case series and literature review
Croat Med J. 2021 Feb 28;62(1):44-51. doi: 10.3325/cmj.2021.62.44.ABSTRACTNeuroendocrine tumors (NET) are a rare and heterogeneous group of neoplasms with variable biological behavior. They frequently metastasize to the liver, requiring active, multimodality treatment. Surgical resection, possible in only a minority of cases, was until recently the only potentially curative option. For unresectable NET with liver metastases, liver transplantation (LT) emerged as a potential curative treatment due to relatively slow growth and indolent behavior of the metastases. In this case series with literature review, we retrospectivel...

Applicability and prognostic value of frailty assessment tools among hospitalized patients with advanced chronic liver disease
CONCLUSION: Frailty assessment using the evaluated tools is feasible among hospitalized cirrhotic patients, identifying those with worse prognosis. CFS had the highest applicability and accuracy for the initial assessment and LFI for the initial and follow-up assessments.PMID:33660956 | PMC:PMC7976891 | DOI:10.3325/cmj.2021.62.8
