Antimicrobial Susceptibility Trends of < em > Streptococcus pneumoniae < /em > by Age Groups Over Recent 10 Years in a Single Hospital in South Korea
CONCLUSION: Erythromycin and ceftriaxone resistance rates and the MDR rate of S. pneumoniae significantly increased during the recent 10 years; the trends in individual antimicrobial resistance rates significantly differed between the age groups. This study indicates the need for caution when using ceftriaxone as an empirical antimicrobial against pneumococcal infections.PMID:33779084 | DOI:10.3349/ymj.2021.62.4.306

Sickle cell disease children's gut colonization by extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing < em > Enterobacterales < /em > : an antibiotic prophylaxis effect?
Conclusion. Resistant enterobacteria colonize SCD children on AP, and this therapy raises the chance of ESBL-producing Enterobacterales colonization. Future studies should focus on prophylactic vaccines as exclusive therapy against pneumococcal infections.PMID:34477545 | DOI:10.1099/jmm.0.001414

JMM Profile: < em > Streptococcus pneumoniae: < /em > sugar-coated captain of the men of death
J Med Microbiol. 2021 Nov;70(11). doi: 10.1099/jmm.0.001446.ABSTRACTStreptococcus pneumoniae is a highly adept human pathogen. A frequent asymptomatic member of the respiratory microbiota, the pneumococcus has a remarkable capacity to cause mucosal (pneumonia and otitis media) and invasive diseases (bacteremia, meningitis). In addition, the organism utilizes a vast battery of virulence factors for tissue and immune evasion. Though recognized as a significant cause of pneumonia for over a century, efforts to develop more effective vaccines remain ongoing. The pathogen's inherent capacity to exchange genetic material is crit...

Effect of COVID-19 on vaccination coverage in Brazil
This study revealed that the ongoing immunization drive saw a steep decline of around 10 to 20% during the (2019-2020) pandemic period in Brazil. These results provide strong evidence towards the decreasing trends following the vaccination programs during the COVID-19 pandemic period in Brazil. Furthermore, our results also highlight the importance of adopting widespread multi-component interventions to improve vaccination uptake rates.PMID:34845982 | DOI:10.1099/jmm.0.001466
