What are Some of the Complications of Short Bowel Syndrome?
Discussion Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is one of the most common gastrointestinal emergencies in neonates. Mortality rates are from 0-45% depending on infant weight and gestation with more premature and smaller infants having greater mortality. NEC usually occurs in premature infants but it also occurs in term infants. The etiology is unknown but is probably multifactorial with ischemia and/or reperfusion playing some role. There are ‘outbreaks’ of NEC but no causative organism has been identified. Regardless of the originating cause, inflammation of the intestine and release of inflammatory mediators causes variou...

Characteristics of US-based physical therapist education programs cited for core faculty deficiencies in 2019-2020
CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that programs residing in a town or rural setting, accredited for ten years or less, housed in an institution with a Carnegie classification of Master's or Baccalaureate, within private institutions, and enroll cohorts less than 31 are more likely to receive citations related to the qualifications or adequacy of core faculty than their counterparts. The description of characteristics common to programs cited could provide guidance to other programs in factors that might predispose them to core faculty deficiencies in the future.PMID:35412418 | DOI:10.1080/09593985.2022.2062691

Doctor of Physical Therapy Education in a Hybrid Learning Environment: a Case Report
CONCLUSION: Hybrid DPT education is feasible and may provide opportunities for more flexible and accessible delivery of DPT education. Outcomes of this case report suggest high student satisfaction, increased student/graduate diversity, and graduate outcomes comparable to national averages as reported in the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE) aggregate data.PMID:35689811 | DOI:10.1093/ptj/pzac074

Developmental presentation, medical complexities, and service delivery for a child with 16p11.2 deletion syndrome.
CONCLUSIONS: The child experienced many difficulties reported in the literature related to the wide phenotype of 16p11.2 deletion syndrome. Focus on caregiver instruction and education to accomplish family-driven, functional outcomes increased carryover and allowed the greatest potential for success. RECOMMENDATIONS FOR CLINICAL PRACTICE: Genetic disorders such as 16p11.2 deletion syndrome are increasingly being recognized as etiologic factors in neurodevelopmental conditions. It is critical for physical therapists to be aware of the varied manifestations and effects of this genetic disorder. Advanced problem solving ...

Compression care for venous leg ulcers: Assessment of medical practices in 100 patients.
CONCLUSION: Data are scarce on compliance with compression banding. This study shows that further efforts are needed to ensure proper patient education and professional training for physicians and allied profession concerning the installation of compression therapy. Total compliance was observed in only 35% of patients. In addition, the products delivered by the pharmacy were not consistent with the prescription in 26% of cases. Many discrepancies were observed between what was prescribed and what the patients achieved. Patient adherence is a crucial issue for compression therapy. Can You Think Yourself Into A Different Person?
For years she had tried to be the perfect wife and mother but now, divorced, with two sons, having gone through another break-up and in despair about her future, she felt as if she’d failed at it all, and she was tired of it. On 6 June 2007 Debbie Hampton, of Greensboro, North Carolina, took an overdose of more than 90 pills – a combination of ten different prescription drugs, some of which she’d stolen from a neighbor’s bedside cabinet. That afternoon, she’d written a note on her computer: “I’ve screwed up this life so bad that there is no place here for me and nothing I can contr...

Simulating the multi ‐disciplinary care team approach: Enhancing student understanding of anatomy through an ultrasound‐anchored interprofessional session
This study aimed to create a modified team‐based learning (TBL) environment utilizing ultrasound technology during an interprofessional learning activity to enhance musculoskeletal anatomy knowledge of first year medical (MD) and physical therapy (PT) students. An ultrasound demonstration of structures of the upper limb was incorporated into the gross anatomy courses for first‐year MD (n = 53) and PT (n = 28) students. Immediately before the learning experience, all students took an individual readiness assurance test (iRAT) based on clinical concepts regarding the assigned study material. Students observed whi...

Using Plain Language and Adding Communication Technology to an Existing Health-Related Questionnaire to Help Generate Accurate Information: Qualitative Study
Conclusions: The use of plain language and ICT within the DTTSQ had both positive and negative effects on the response processes of its target population. The results of this study emphasize the importance of earlier recommendations to accompany any adaption of any questionnaire to a new mode of delivery by demonstrating the difference and equivalence between the two different modes and to scientifically evaluate the applicability of the newly developed mode of the questionnaire in its intended setting. This is especially important in a digital era in which the use of plain language within health care is increasingly being advocated.

Overview of Curricula About Pain in Physical Therapist Education Programs in Brazil: A Faculty Survey.
Conclusions: Most Brazilian physical therapist education programs do not offer a specific pain course. When a pain course is presented in the curriculum, some content recommended for physical therapist education programs by the International Association for the Study of Pain is not covered. The absence of a pain course in physical therapist education programs may have implications for pain management. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study about pain education in physical therapist education programs in Brazil. PMID: 30085225 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Novel model to teach health care delivery in geriatrics
The objectives were to 1. Introduce current health policies that affect older adults; 2. Understand the effects of health policy and social determinants of health on the older adults in their future practice; 3. Challenge learners to apply their knowledge and develop health advocacy strategies for older adults; and 4) Teach the importance of teamwork in interprofessional practice within a geriatric population. The health policy curriculum impacted 487 learners for 12 sessions over three years. Four themes emerged with the sessions: health policy awareness, interprofessional appreciation, patient care "pearls," and pharmacol...
