Nose blowing after endoscopic sinus surgery does not adversely affect outcomes
ConclusionNose blowing after ESS does not appear to measurably improve symptoms of nasal congestion or general sinonasal quality of life, nor does it seem to adversely affect the frequency or severity of postoperative epistaxis during the first postoperative week. Judicious nose blowing may be permissible immediately after uncomplicated ESS. Level of Evidence1b. Laryngoscope, 2017

Effect of matrix metalloproteinase inhibitor on disrupted E ‐cadherin after acid exposure in the human nasal epithelium
ConclusionOur results suggest that altered expression of E‐cadherin in the nasal epithelium by acid exposure may be a possible mechanism for nasal tissue injury in chronic nasal inflammation with LPRD, and that MMP inhibition is a potential treatment. Level of EvidenceNA. Laryngoscope, 2017

The radioanatomy of endonasal flap coverage of skull base defects: A tool for preoperative planning
ConclusionsWe have developed a simple tool for the calculation of endonasal flap coverage of surgical skull base defects on preoperative CT scans. Level of Evidence4 Laryngoscope, 2017

Evolving trends in sinus surgery: What is the impact of balloon sinus dilation?
ConclusionThe performance of BD has increased markedly in recent years. Because the use of ESS codes remain stable, observed BD trends are unlikely to be due simply to greater familiarity with newer CPT coding. The reasons for the striking increase in BD popularity are speculative and beyond the scope of this analysis, but further study may be needed. Level of EvidenceNA. Laryngoscope, 2017

Staphylococcus Aureus V8 protease disrupts the integrity of the airway epithelial barrier and impairs IL ‐6 production in vitro
ConclusionS. aureus V8 protease causes dysfunction of mucosal barrier structure and function indicative of a leaky barrier. A reduction in IL‐6 levels suggests that the mucosal immunity is impaired by this protease and thus has the potential to contribute to CRS recalcitrance. Level of EvidenceNA. Laryngoscope, 2017

Relationship between chronic rhinosinusitis exacerbation frequency and asthma control
ConclusionsAECRS are negatively associated with the level of asthma control in asthmatic CRS patients, independent of CRS symptom severity. These results highlight AECRS as a distinct clinical manifestation of CRS that should be routinely assessed in CRS patients. Level of Evidence2c. Laryngoscope, 2017

Long ‐term impact of endoscopic orbital decompression on sinonasal‐specific quality of life
ConclusionEndoscopic orbital decompression is associated at 1 year with a significant improvement in sinonasal‐specific quality of life, which is driven by the psychological and sleep dysfunction domains. Adjunctive septoplasty has no significant impact on SNOT‐22 scores. Level of Evidence4. Laryngoscope, 2017

Randomized controlled trial of steroid ‐soaked absorbable calcium alginate nasal packing following endoscopic sinus surgery
ConclusionsThis study demonstrated that steroid‐soaked, absorbable nasal packing can be used to enhance wound healing after endoscopic sinus surgery and to prevent polypoid changes in the nasal mucosa. Level of Evidence1b. Laryngoscope, 2017

A paradigm for evaluation and management of the maxillary sinus before dental implantation
ConclusionCraniofacial CT is crucial for pre‐dental implantation sinonasal evaluation. The risk of dental implant‐related chronic rhinosinusitis is low for patients with cysts, polyps, or mucosal thickening in the maxillary sinus. However, preventive endoscopic sinus surgery is recommended for patients with incurable chronic rhinosinusitis, fungal sinusitis, and large polyps or cysts. Level of Evidence4. Laryngoscope, 2017

Evolution of the endoscopic modified Lothrop procedure: A systematic review and meta ‐analysis
ConclusionsIn the last decade, EMLP has been performed more frequently for tumors. Recent studies have demonstrated improved symptom outcomes and a trend toward improved patency rates. The revision rate increased significantly when follow‐up exceeded 2 years. Laryngoscope, 2017

Sinonasal quality of life after endoscopic resection of malignant sinonasal and skull base tumors
ConclusionIn contrast to previously reported series, in this cohort endoscopic resection of sinonasal tumors appears to be followed by an improvement in QoL, which is sustained over a 2‐year period. Level of Evidence2b. Laryngoscope, 2017
