Using preoperative SNOT‐22 score to inform patient decision for Endoscopic sinus surgery
ConclusionOutcomes from this study suggest that patients with a preoperative SNOT‐22 score higher than 30 points receive a greater than 75% chance of achieving an MCID and on average obtain a 45% relative improvement in their QoL after ESS. Patients with SNOT‐22 score of less than 20 did not experience improved QoL from ESS. Level of Evidence2b. Laryngoscope, 2014

Surgical anatomy and variations of the infraorbital nerve
ConclusionsDescent of the ION into the maxillary sinus is a common anatomic variant that is more prevalent in the setting of an ipsilateral infraorbital ethmoid cell. Descended nerves are associated with the foramen significantly further below the inferior orbital rim than those of nondescended nerves. These observations may help surgeons avoid iatrogenic ION injury. Level of EvidenceN/A. Laryngoscope, 2015

Corticosteroid treatment regulates mucosal remodeling in chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps
ConclusionsCS treatment modulates NP mucosa remodeling, particularly by promoting epithelial repair, regulating tissue remodeling markers, increasing total collagen content, and reducing tissue eosinophil infiltration. Level of Evidence4 Laryngoscope, 2015

Feasibility of septal body volume reduction for patients with nasal obstruction
ConclusionsCombined SBVR and turbinoplasty appears to be more effective than turbinoplasty alone for the treatment of nasal obstruction in patients with inferior turbinate and septal body hypertrophy. Level of Evidence1b. Laryngoscope, 2015

Level of secreted HMGB1 correlates with severity of inflammation in chronic rhinosinusitis
ConclusionOur results showed that HMGB1 is secreted into the extracellular area space in the upper airway, and HMGB1 levels in nasal lavage fluid correlate with severity of inflammation, as assessed by the Lund‐Mackay staging system for chronic rhinosinusitis. These results provide evidence for HMGB1 as an inflammatory mediator associated with the severity of chronic rhinosinusitis. Level of EvidenceN/A. Laryngoscope, 2015

Olfactory performance after Crenotherapy in chronic rhinosinusitis in the elderly
ConclusionsWe demonstrated that crenotherapy effectively improves olfactory function in elderly patients with CRS. Finally, our study suggests that crenotherapy represents a safe therapeutic strategy for the treatment of CRS and olfactory dysfunction in the elderly. Level of Evidence3B. Laryngoscope, 2015

Cost of adult chronic rhinosinusitis: A systematic review
The objective of this systematic review was to summarize the literature evaluating the costs associated with the management of adult chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) using Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta‐Analyses guidelines. Two separate authors systematically searched eight commonly used medical databases. Included articles were categorized into seven domains: 1) overall healthcare cost (direct and indirect), 2) resource utilization, 3) medical management strategies, 4) overall procedure cost of endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS), 5) intraoperative technologies, 6) ESS litigation, and 7) CRS diagnostic...

The clinical efficacy of surgical interventions for empty nose syndrome: A systematic review
ConclusionSurgical intervention for ENS appears to result in clinical improvement, although not all patients derived benefit. Long‐term follow‐up should be considered utilizing using both subjective (SNOT‐25) and objective (rhinomanometry) measures of clinical outcome. Laryngoscope, 2015

Sinonasal organized Hematoma: Clinical features of seventeen cases and a systematic review
ConclusionsWe reported 17 cases of OH, including a case of frontal sinus and a case of sphenoid sinus lesion. A large proportion of OH patients had bony destruction of the affected sinus on CT. In these patients, a careful diagnosis should be made to distinguish them from a malignant tumor or other expansile diseases. Level of Evidence4. Laryngoscope, 2015

Contemporary applications of frontal sinus trephination: A systematic review of the literature
Our objective was to perform a systematic review of the literature on contemporary indications and outcomes for frontal sinus trephination and present an illustrative case of an endoscopically assisted repair of a subcutaneous frontal sinus fistula by trephination technique. PubMed and Ovid databases were used as data sources. A systematic review of the English literature was completed to review reports of frontal trephination from 1980 to 2014. Articles meeting inclusion criteria for inflammatory and noninflammatory indications were reviewed. Articles were systematically reviewed and graded by evidence‐based medicine le...

Mucosal contact points and paranasal sinus pneumatization: Does radiology predict headache causality?
ConclusionsRadiological identification of MCP, CB, or hyperpneumatized sinuses does not seem to be a predictor of headache causality. Further studies are required to identify clinical scenarios in which these variations may contribute to pain symptoms. Level of Evidence3b. Laryngoscope, 2015

The influence of spray cryotherapy on wound healing following endoscopic sinus surgery in chronic rhinosinusitis
ConclusionsThese preliminary results reveal an improvement in postoperative scores, demonstrating enhanced healing following spray cryotherapy. However, without patient subjective outcomes, the study is limited. Additional studies with longer follow‐up and larger samples are needed to describe the effects of cryotherapy on wound healing.
