Baylor University Medical Center's leap to prominence: The 1972 conference "Great Ideas in Surgery".
Abstract In 1972, Baylor University Medical Center established the A. Webb Roberts Center for Continuing Education in the Health Sciences. The center included the Beulah Porter Beasley Memorial Auditorium and a 25,000-volume medical library. The author was fortunate enough to attend the 2-day meeting (November 3-4) as a fellow in cardiovascular surgery. The following account is based on his personal recollections but also on the papers published by the participants and bequeathed to him by the late chief of the Department of Surgery, Robert S. Sparkman, MD. PMID: 31656414 [PubMed]

A virtual research showcase and judging platform created from a patchwork of workplace applications
CONCLUSIONS: The pandemic created opportunities for hospitals to explore transforming meetings from primarily live and onsite into hybrid and fully virtual events. While many corporate hospitals have transitioned back to primarily in-person programming, newly adopted online practices such as online judging platforms and automation of continuing medical education tasks will likely remain. As in-person restrictions within healthcare settings are lifted or eased at uneven rates, organizations may continue to explore the value of in-person meetings versus the video conference experience of the same meeting.PMID:37101920 | PMC:...

Education dominates local government conference on final afternoon
A busy afternoon’s debates on education opened included a commitment that  UNISON would oppose government policies on academies. But Pam Howard for the executive also stated that there had to be a two-strand approach, where the union also organised within academies when and where they exist. She added that this also “gives us recruitment and organising opportunities – opportunities that we need to take,” and that this would include working alongside other school unions where possible. Lee Spate from Portsmouth stressed that an organised and strong response after the announcement earlier this year that all schoo...

Drug Promotion in India Since 2000: Problems Remain.
This article begins with an analysis of the therapeutic value of medications on the Indian market because, by definition, if a drug has no therapeutic value or has a negative benefit-to-harm ratio, then any promotion of that drug is inappropriate. It then examines 2 Indian case studies: drug promotion in Mumbai and the misuse of the World Health Organization logo in promotion. Next it describes specific types of promotion: advertisements in medical journals, brochures, and pamphlets; the actions of sales representatives; and the content of continuing medical education courses and medical conferences. The next sections exam...
