Conclusion: This preliminary analysis of the observational TRACE-EU study suggests that managing HMII patients with a vitamin K antagonist without aspirin may help to reduce the incidence of major bleeding without increasing the risk of thrombo-embolic events including ischaemic stroke and device thrombosis. Further prospective studies are needed.

The Subclavian Intraaortic Balloon Pump: A Compelling Bridge Device for Advanced Heart Failure
Conclusions The SC-IABP provided excellent hemodynamic support with minimal morbidity and mortality, allowed for extensive rehabilitation, and permitted more than 90% of patients to receive their intended therapy. Therefore, SC-IABP is a compelling bridge device for patients with advanced congestive heart failure.

Factors Associated with Prolonged Survival in Left Ventricular Assist Device Recipients
ConclusionsPreoperative diabetes and amiodarone use were associated with poor long-term survival in LVAD recipients. Development of early complications of stroke, gastrointestinal bleeding, hemolysis, or pump thrombosis was also associated with poor long-term survival. Early diagnosis and treatment of these complications may improve survival in LVAD recipients.

Outflow cannula position for left ventricular assist device: A propensity score ‐matched study
ConclusionNo observed difference in mortality when adjusting for competing risk of heart transplantation. There was also no difference in stroke, pump thrombosis, driveline infection. Larger studies are required to confirm these findings. These preliminary data support the use of left-sided anastomoses to facilitate subsequent re-entry during heart transplantation.

Conclusions: Patients on long-term support have an excellent haemodynamic profile and show an acceptable risk-benefit ratio. Although heart transplantation remains the ultimate target at present, our data show that long-term circulatory support is a viable option with the potential to become a more permanent solution in the long-term.

Building a bioartificial heart: Obstacles and opportunities
The growing numbers of patients with heart failure, both in the United States and around the globe, has led to a pressing need for new therapies. Heart transplantation is a very restricted option due to the limited number of donor hearts available —currently approximately 2800 per year in the United States. Transplant patients also have to take immunosuppressive drugs for the rest of their lives. Ventricular assist devices, used either as bridge to transplant or destination therapy, can prolong patient survival, but present a number of comp lications, including thrombosis, stroke, and infection.
