Volume‐Outcomes relationship in the era of modern coronary intervention ‐ Results from the prospective multicenter German DES.DE registry ‐
Conclusions: In the era of modern coronary intervention technological advances such as DES have not offset the inverse relation between procedural volume and both in‐hospital and 1‐year outcomes after PCI. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Procedural success and long‐term outcomes of aspiration thrombectomy for the treatment of stent thrombosis
Conclusions: Aspiration thrombectomy is associated with improved coronary flow and procedural success but is not associated with improved long‐term outcomes among patients undergoing percutaneous intervention for definite ST. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Spontaneous preoperative microembolic signals detected with transcranial Doppler are associated with vulnerable carotid plaque characteristics.
Conclusion: Spontaneous MES were detected in 26% of symptomatic patients scheduled for CEA and were associated with unstable carotid plaque characteristics. TCD might be a useful tool to help identify patients with vulnerable plaques. PMID: 23817452 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Hypercoagulability Markers Predict Thrombosis in Single Ventricle Neonates Undergoing Cardiac Surgery.
CONCLUSIONS: Single ventricle physiology patients are at higher risk for thrombosis compared with other neonates after cardiac surgery. Hypercoagulable panel testing may help risk stratify patients and guide patient specific anticoagulation management in the postoperative period. PMID: 23809731 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Five‐year clinical follow‐up of a randomized comparison of a polymer‐free sirolimus‐eluting stent versus a polymer‐based paclitaxel‐eluting stent in patients with diabetes mellitus (LIPSIA Yukon trial)
Conclusion At 5 years of follow‐up, clinical outcome was similar between the polymer‐free sirolimus‐eluting Yukon Choice stent and the polymer‐based paclitaxel‐eluting Taxus Liberté stent. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Preoperative Atrial Fibrillation Increases Risk of Thromboembolic Events After Left Ventricular Assist Device Implantation.
CONCLUSIONS: Patients with preoperative AF have a lower freedom from TE events after LVAD implant. While overall late survival was not significantly reduced in these patients, refinement in anticoagulation strategies after VAD implant may be required. 115 * the frozen elephant trunk technique for the treatment of complicated type b aortic dissection: early multicentre experience
Conclusions: The FET technique constitutes a feasible therapeutic option, if TEVAR is not recommended. In contrast to conventional aortic surgery via a lateral thoracotomy, the FET procedure provides the opportunity for simultaneous treatment of the ascending aorta and aortic arch, if necessary.

117 * long-term results of the frozen elephant trunk technique for acute type a aortic dissection from a 15-year experience
Conclusions: The FET technique resulted in excellent aortic remodelling on the downstream aorta and could improve the long-term outcome for AAAD.

248 * long-term circulatory support with rotary blood pumps: is it worthwhile?
Conclusions: Patients on long-term support have an excellent haemodynamic profile and show an acceptable risk-benefit ratio. Although heart transplantation remains the ultimate target at present, our data show that long-term circulatory support is a viable option with the potential to become a more permanent solution in the long-term.

Left Atrial Reverse Remodeling Following Valve Surgery for Chronic Degenerative Mitral Regurgitation in Patients with Preoperative Sinus Rhythm: Effects on Long‐Term Outcome
ConclusionsPreoperative LA enlargement due to severe degenerative MR in patients with sinus rhythm demonstrates a high potential for postoperative reverse remodeling following MVS. The absence of postoperative LARR was not associated with an increase in the risk of postoperative mortality or adverse clinical events.

Significance of the learning curve in left atrial appendage occlusion with two different devices
Conclusions: Complications associated with LAA occlusion cluster early in the periprocedural period and significantly decrease in frequency with operator experience. Initial experience gained with one of device may improve outcome with use of alternative LAA occlusion devices. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

First in‐vivo evaluation of a flexible self‐apposing left atrial appendage closure device in the canine model
Conclusion: The percutaneous delivery of a novel self‐positioning LAA occlusion device is feasible and safe in a canine model. At 30 days, all devices displayed complete healing and occlusion of the LAA without any device related adverse events. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Thromboembolism in a patient with a mechanical mitral valve during anticoagulation with dabigatran etexilate.
We report a 57-year-old man with a mechanical heart valve who experienced acute upper limb thromboembolism during dabigatran intake. Dabigatran might be inadequate for thromboprophylaxis after mechanical valve replacement. PMID: 24182477 [PubMed - in process]

Guideline adherence in antithrombotic treatment after concomitant ablation surgery in atrial fibrillation patients
CONCLUSIONS Real-life OAC prescription in AF patients showed a moderate guideline adherence, with high-risk patients being undertreated and low-risk patients being overtreated. These findings stress the importance that antithrombotic treatment in patients undergoing AF surgery needs to be critically re-evaluated.
